Is the city of Morro Bay headed in the right direction? Are its stated goals in line with what you think they should be to help guide the city toward fulfilling the best interests of its residents? Or does the city need some new goals that better serve those who live and run businesses in Morro Bay?
Residents can weigh in on those questions — and more — when the City Council conducts a goal-setting workshop on Tuesday, March 6, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. and on Wednesday, March 7, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Morro Bay Community Center. The schedule calls for the public to be given the opportunity to make comments about the goals at the start of each day's session.
The Council is expected to discuss new goals, tentatively identify desirable ones and then confirm those at a future Council meeting. Traditionally, the city staff updates the Council on past goals at the start of the goal-setting process.
The priority goals adopted in 2010 included:
A. Develop and maintain a structurally-sustainable budget.
B. Maintain infrastructure.
C. Develop a plan to ensure that (Morro Bay) power plant lease negotiations result in the highest and most beneficial return for the community.
Other goals that were approved in 2010 included:
— Ensure a safe and sustainable water supply in Morro Bay.
— Stick to the timetable for completing the wastewater treatment plant.
— Continue working with the commercial sector to support local businesses.
— Offer enhanced public and alternative transportation opportunities.
— Decide on the restructuring of the Public Services Department.
The "success factors" in achieving the 2010 priority goals are also listed with all the goals at Morro Bay Goal Setting Summary.
City manager Andrea Leuker said the Council last year discussed goals at their March 8 meeting instead of holding a separate workshop. Whether the Council adopted new or additional goals at that time was not immediately available.
