Three residents have filed as candidates for mayor of Morro Bay and three as candidates for the City Council in the city's June 5 primary election, as of February 29 afternoon. But others can still file.
Voters will be casting ballots for two Council positions in the primary.
The mayoral candidates are Carla Borchard, current City Council member and local restaurant owner; Jamie Irons, former city Planning Commission member and an engineer at the Morro Bay Power Plant, and Joseph Yukich, local restaurant owner.
City Council candidates are Jim Hayes, recently-retired employee in the city Public Works Department; Christine Johnson, president of the Morro Bay Friends of the Library, and Noah Smukler, current member of the City Council.
Those seeking to run for mayor have until March 9 to submit papers to the city clerk to qualify as candidates. Mayor Bill Yates did not file to run for reelection, as of February 29. If he doesn't seek reelection, other mayoral candidates will have until March 14 to submit papers, under election rules.
For Council candidates, all apparently have until March 14 to submit papers to qualify as candidates, since Borchard did not file for reelection as a Council member.
The two who receive the most votes for mayor and the four who receive the most votes for Council in the June 5 primary will face off in the November 6 general election — except that those candidates who receive 51% of the votes cast in the primary for either mayor or Council are elected.
