Independence Day
by Roe Yeager
Independence Day is upon us as we celebrate the citizens of our
great country. Every year we are reminded that through a new
vision, determination and hard work, our new country broke its
ties with the United Kingdom to stand on its own as a land and
people. 1776 was many years ago and I wonder what those who
declared this triumph would say looking at how we have handled
their victory.
Many people will be celebrating this day,
perhaps simply because it is a day off from work. There will be
picnics and fireworks where family and friends, and those unknown
to us at public gatherings, will come together to joyfully
acknowledge the event of that famous date.
I want to include a piece I found in
Wikipedia that I had not read before.
John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail:
"The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in
the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be
celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary
festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance,
by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be
solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns,
bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent
to the other, from this time forward forever more."
So, here we are now ready to celebrate
again this amazing event that has brought our country to what it
is today. Just as there were many challenges these leaders faced
then, we are in the same position. In some cases, starting things
new, and in other ways, changing things that will better benefit
the citizens of our country and cause us to raise our heads proud
of what has been accomplished.
I am reminded to remember all that I am
grateful for by being an American. I am grateful for the
Constitution and the Bill of Rights that guarantee me the right to
freely move about my country. I am grateful for the right to
express my thoughts and feelings. I am honored to be among those
citizens who make up this country and strive to keep our country
safe and free.
I truly wish greatness for this country and
its citizens and that one day this country, once again, will be
the home of the free and the brave. My wish is that we will all
honor and care for each other, as well as this land that is our
home. I wish that we will find ways to be always happy knowing
this is the best place on earth to be and how privileged we are to
be here and now. And I wish the future generations to come will be
at peace knowing we did our best to make it so.
Happy Fourth and God Bless!
