Founders Day Picnic - July 17
Morro Bay to Celebrate 50th Birthday With Community Picnic
Get ready for a flashback to 1964 as
citizens of Morro Bay gather on Thursday, July 17, to
celebrate the city’s 50th birthday. Sights and sounds of
the ’60s will be everywhere during the Founder’s Day
Community Picnic from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in City Park at the
intersection of Morro Bay Boulevard and Harbor Street. DJ
Joel McMickell, host of the Cuppa Joel morning show on
97.3 The Rock, will play all the biggest hits from 1964,
followed by local music man Lenny Blue and the Landmark &
Legacy Variety Show, a humorous revue performed by a
troupe of local kids. Community members are invited to
bring their own picnic dinners to the park to enjoy with
friends and neighbors. A special Morro Bay birthday cake
provided by Spencer’s Fresh Markets will be served for
dessert as the crowd gathers to sing “Happy Birthday” to
Morro Bay.
Bits of nostalgia and great photo
opportunities will be everywhere. A recently restored
replica of a 1964 Morro Bay police cruiser will be on
hand, along with a vintage Morro Bay fire truck. The
Historical Society of Morro Bay will share its collection
of historical photos and memorabilia. And, to add to the
1960s ambiance, the Harbor Department will be bringing a
vintage lifeguard tower to the park for the day.
Commemorative 50th anniversary T-shirts and pins will be
available for purchase at the picnic. Several community
groups will have booths displaying information about
upcoming events and projects that are part of the ongoing
50th anniversary celebration.
The Founder’s Day Picnic is one highlight
of a year-long community celebration filled with festive
activities, civic-minded projects and memorable moments.
The 50th anniversary year began with a beach walk on New
Year’s Day and will continue with several events yet to
come, including the Dahlia Daze Parade in September and a
historical bicycle tour in October.
Proceeds from 50th anniversary activities
will go toward the completion of an important community
legacy project, a fisherman’s family statue titled “Those
Who Wait,” which will be installed at the harbor entrance
by Central Coast Women for Fisheries. To learn more about
the statue, go to

Morro Bay 50th Celebration Helps Fund ‘Those Who Wait’ Statue
The Morro Bay 50th Celebration Committee recently contributed $2,500 toward completion of a public art sculpture to be installed at Target Rock near the entrance of Morro Bay Harbor. Central Coast Women for Fisheries has been working to raise funds for the larger-than-life-size bronze sculpture of a woman and two children looking out to sea. Titled “Those Who Wait,” it is dedicated to the families of fishermen who wait on shore.
The Morro Bay 50th Celebration Committee hopes to make additional donations to the project as fundraising activities continue. The goal is to have the legacy art project fully funded before the end of Morro Bay’s 50th Anniversary year, along with the completion of several other community projects, including the burial of a time capsule and the planting of 50 cypress trees at key locations in the city. For the latest on all 50th Anniversary activities, go to Morro Bay 50th.
Information about the sculpture project and how to donate is available at Central Coast Women for Fisheries.
