You Can Do It

by Shana Ogren Lourey

Imagine your team.  Who is it?

The team can be as large or as small as you want.  Your team is the group of people that root you on as you progress through life.

Choose people that you know, such as family, friends, and peers.  Or you can choose people that you’ve never met before, but that you can somehow imagine as an ally by your side. The folks on your team can be representative of forces in your life.  My team includes everybody from my brother to Willy Wonka, a character in a novel.

After listing these people, write next to their name what type of support or encouragement they provide.  How do they make you feel?  How do you feel about them?  What strong or good force does each represent for you?

Elisa (boss I once had) – Hard Working, Confidence
Pablo Neruda (a favorite poet) – Fight, Bravery, Warrior for Love
My father – Pride, Laughter, Admiration
God – Perspective, Faith, Accomplishment
Willy Wonka – Fantasy, Eccentricity, Belief in Your Dreams

Keep this list highly accessible to yourself, whether it is in your wallet or just in your mind.  Refer to it as much as you need.  Your teammates do not express cynicism, doubt, or negativity towards you.  They feel hope and faith in you, excitement, support, and celebration of what you are capable of.  They are always here for you.

I used to keep a post-it note on my bathroom mirror that said "God is cheering you on!"  I figured if God could be on my team, then no doubt, I would win.

Have I won?  Sometimes.  Enough times to thank my team and give them some credit for helping me out.

Thanks, Elisa!  Thanks, God!  Thanks, Willy!
