The Bioneers are Coming to Town Again!
by Lawson Schaller
Thanks to Stacey Hunt and Ecologistics, a local non-profit that is organizing the event, we will have our second regional Bioneers Conference at the Vet's Hall in San Luis Obispo, October 14-16. You will find a digital brochure of this year's event on Ecologistics website.
I wrote about the Bioneers and this event last year. A little recap - Bioneers is the name of a group founded 20 years ago by Kenny Ausubel and Nina Simons. The Bioneers website states "Bioneers is inspiring a shift to live on Earth in ways that honor the web of life, each other and future generations." And, "Bioneers has two keystone goals to help make this shift successfully"-
-Connect people with solutions by popularizing breakthrough ideas and practices.
-Grow social capital by catalyzing, connecting, and strengthening strategic networks, including bioregional and community-based alliances."
Our regional Bioneers Conference, being held at the SLO Vet's Hall, will have internationally acclaimed speakers beamed in from the main Bioneers Conference, just like last year.
In conjunction with the international conference, the regional conference will have an amazing range of local experts speaking, presenting, and leading field trips—with opportunities to learn about and participate in sustainable food supplies, green building, permaculture, watershed restoration, human impact on the planet, education, leadership, partnerships, networks, and much more—transforming the economy and culture with practical ideas and solutions.
The Bioneers have much of their focus on emerging technologies and ideas, but also support and encourage community networks, alliances and common sense approaches like growing your own fruits and vegetables and helping out your neighbors.
There is overlap and commonality between Bioneers and Transition Towns, which I have written about before. In a nutshell, communities are coming together to build lasting resiliency—a way of life that we can keep in balance and maintain for future generations. After all, our children, grandchildren and many many generations to come will inherit what we leave, (or don't leave). If you would like to learn more about all this and be a part of the change, you are invited to participate. Join in with others, in partnership of and for our community. I highly recommend you go to the Central Coast Bioneers conference.
I attended the event last year and for me it was one of the more inspirational and informative conferences I have ever attended. Last year's speakers included Jane Goodall, Andy Lipkis, (who, as a teenager, founded Tree People) and many others. I was particularly impressed with how they addressed very serious and looming problems yet spoke with humor, awareness, and light heartedness. They integrated examples of successful projects and other possible solutions, ideas, and strategies going forward. I am sure this year's speakers will be equally inspiring and informative.
A common thread in the talks was how one person's ideas and actions can make a real difference. A number of speakers wove their relationship with their grandchildren and future generations into their message also.
A big thanks goes out to Ecologistics and the volunteers for organizing and hosting the event, and also to the sponsors for their support. If you are interested in volunteering or sponsoring please contact Ecologistics via their website.
