Dahlia Daze Parade Entry Deadline Nears

Everybody loves a parade, and Morro Bay is no exception. To celebrate Dahlia Daze and the 50th anniversary of the city, Morro Bay is taking to the streets with parade floats and marching bands, cars and horses, bikes and skateboards, dancers and clowns.

The parade gets under way at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at City Park and makes its way through the heart of downtown.

Organizers stress that everyone is welcome to join the parade, which will go down Morro Bay Boulevard, north on Main Street and back up Harbor Street, ending at the Morro Bay Community Center. The deadline for entries is Aug. 25.

Grand marshal of the parade will be Wachtang “Botso” Korisheli. The subject of the award-winning documentary “Botso,” this beloved local music teacher and founder of the San Luis Obispo Youth Symphony is also the creator of Morro Bay's famous giant outdoor chessboard.

A true community celebration, the parade is being sponsored by the Morro Bay 50th Anniversary Committee, Dahlia Daze, the Historical Society of Morro Bay and the Morro Bay Chamber of Commerce.

It is just one of the highlights of this year's Dahlia Daze celebration, which takes place Sept. 5-6 at the Community Center. The annual event, which honors the city's official flower, will have several added features this year, including the crowning of the Dahlia Princess.

For registration information, go to MorroBay50th.com or call Lisa Winn at the Morro Bay Chamber of Commerce, (805) 772-4467.

VegThisWay LLC entered the Wells Fargo Works Contest, which aims to help small businesses grow and succeed, and was recently declared a finalist in the competition.

The exhibit described below is the product of all the photographs delivered to the SLO History Museum by the people at the MB power plant just before it closed. The Museum is open Wed-Mon, 10-4, free entry, and is in the old Carnegie Library next to the Mission in SLO.

Three Stacks and a Rock: The Morro Bay Power Plant, 1955-2014

Through September 2014

If you are under 60, you have never seen the skyline of Morro Bay without the power plant stacks. Rising inexorably against a backdrop of sky, rock, and ocean, these symbols of technology, design, and growth became lightning rods for debate over cultural and ecological resources. The power plant closed in early 2014 amid tightening environmental regulation, a saturated electricity market, and corporate instability. There are no demolition plans, so for now the stacks remain.

A new exhibit at the History Center tells the story of the Morro Bay Power Plant, from construction in the 1950s and 60s to the present. The display features images from an archival collection that was compiled by employees of the Power Plant and donated to the History Center earlier this year.
