A Roe Adventure by Roe Yeager
A peaceful walk along the path to the rock is shattered by the sound of a scream coming from the middle of the waterway out towards the harbor entrance. I only see several otters splashing in the water and the inevitable gulls hanging around them hoping for some leftovers.
It turns out to be the sound of a baby sea otter who is apparently upset that it's mother left it bobbing on top of the water's surface while she dove to get some breakfast. I recognized this sound because when I used to live here years ago and I was walking along the pier in the harbor, I observed a mother otter with her baby on her stomach near the pier pilings. I was excited to be able to see them so close. Read More
Ask the Doc by Dr. Robert Swain
A: First what is a "crackhead?" The dictionary says it is someone who is addicted to cocaine or other chemicals. In the rest of the article I will be referring to "crackheads" as dietary "crackheads." What is a dietary "crackhead?" One who is addicted to refined carbohydrates and sugars. Refined carbohydrates have what is called an addiction chemistry that is induced when we eat these foods. This addiction chemistry makes us crave these refined carbohydrates. Read More

In an ongoing forum, Virbac Animal Health has veterinarians submit 'The funniest question you've ever been asked by a client.' Just about daily we have to hide incredulity behind the mask of a serious and respecting manner. Part of the problem is that these moments arrive unannounced, from one second to the next. Beyond the Badge by Richard Hannibal
GUN CONTROL! I don't care where you are on the political spectrum, those two words generate a surge of emotion. Then add children, pregnant women, and puppies, and you create a mini-war of factions. I have lived long enough for my political pendulum to swing from being a young conservative, to a middle-age liberal, to where I am now — a middle-of-the-road thinker. This is where I ponder society's woes. Read More
Double Vision by Shana Ogren
Last month, my husband and baby son and I rode through the McDonald's drive-in as we headed home late at night. We placed a nice order, and it ended up being delicious. We ordered a four piece Chicken McNuggets, small soda, a double Quarter Pounder with cheese meal, and a medium fry and small mocha coffee. These are each special items to me now. As we drove up to pay, the cashier told us that the car in front of us had already paid for our order. "Huh?" I asked. "Are you serious?" The woman smiled and told us yes, it was covered. Read More
Feel Better Forever by Brian Dorfman
I've worked with thousands of feet over the years and have found that one very simple self-massage technique works to relieve tightness and pain in about 99% of all cases. Whether you have a diagnosis of plantar fasciitis or Morton's neuroma or simply experience painful and tight feet, you can use this technique and get positive results. And it's got to be the least expensive therapy in town. All you need is a tennis ball and a floor. Read More

Composting food and yard "waste" is a fairly simple thing to do and can benefit you and the environment. Taking a step back, many would argue that "waste" is not waste and is instead a valuable resource – it serves primarily as soil amendment. Read More
The Human Condition by John Bullaro
There is a strange and escalating logic at work in the history of gun ownership in America, where fears exist akin to the nineteenth-century frontier mentality. There exists today a parallel fear by many homeowners that they must, like their nineteenth century cousins, protect their property and the lives of loved ones with a gun. Read More
