People Passing
By the grocery, a homeless man smokes.
Seeing me, he hides his cigarette,
stands up, nods his head, and says,
Ma'am, may you have a beautiful day.
His greeting follows me into the store
where I gather green beans and bread.
On leaving, I plan to thank the man,
and talk to him, but he's gone. Read

One Poet's Perspective by Jane Elsdon
How many of the treasures in my memory vault
originated in Los Osos? I daresay it's a significant sum. My first are
from family camping trips to Montana de Oro while we still lived in
Riverside. What a discovery. My second and most cherished memories were
of a writers' group I discovered in the late seventies after we moved
from Southern California. Every month I drove from Atascadero to Los
Osos to meet with Los Osos Writers Group, eager aspiring writers who
critiqued each other's work. Many of them to this day remain among my
dearest friends. Now that's what I call true treasures.Read More
Opera SLO by Kathryn Bumpass
The 2012-13 season of the Met Live in HD
begins Saturday, October 13. A feast of Italian opera awaits viewers,
with Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore leading off.
Four Verdi operas, two by Donizetti, one by Zandonai, and two 18th
century works by Mozart and Handel make up the largest serving of this
season's fare. Not that other great opera traditions have been
neglected: Berlioz's epic Les Troyens and Wagner's Parsifal
are also scheduled, as is a new opera by the young British composer
Thomas Ades, The Tempest. Read More
Practicing Poetic Justice by Deborah Tobola
Ten years ago a hummingbird flew into and
out of the prison building I worked in and changed the trajectory of my
life. In the brilliant bird's journey, I found the perfect metaphor for
the practice of art in prison — and a poem. Read More
Shutterbugs, Featuring Jerry Kirkhart
My photography was originally used to enhance my
career of some 43 years of teaching biology and zoology. This was
before digital, and almost all my film was converted to slides that had
to do with the lessons being taught. My camera was primarily on
"program" mode, so I did not think much about post-processing nor
camera settings and let the camera decide what was best for each image.
That was to change when I moved to the coast. Read More
Slo Coast Cooking by Elise Griffith
Recently Spencer's Fresh markets had boneless,
skinless chicken breasts on sale for $1.99 per pound in value packs.
One value pack holds five or six chicken breast pieces. Normally, I'd
try to get several meals from that poultry meat in casseroles, soups,
or stews, but I decided to "live it up" and spice things up for dinner.
There's a limit to the amount of casserole my husband's willing to
eat — and frankly, I felt my dinnertime repertoire has
been leaning towards dull. Read More
