California State Parks

Needed: Museum of Natural History Volunteer Electrical Engineer

The Morro Bay Museum of Natural History seeks a retired or semi-retired electrical engineer who can volunteer some time to help troubleshoot and repair exhibits.  Our previous volunteer engineer has moved out of the area, but left two extensive manuals filled with diagrams, parts lists, and repair procedures.  The Museum has a number of exhibits with electronic or computer controls.  We need someone with a background in circuit design and/or repair who can help us keep our exhibits running, at least on a monthly basis.  To inquire or get further information, please contact Rouvaishyana, Museum Manager at (805) 772-2694 ext. 105 or via email.

 Become a Docent

Morro Bay State Parks Museum of Natural History

Do we have a job for you! Become a docent for the California State Parks in San Luis Obispo County. Work with the public or behind the scenes to help people enjoy, understand, and protect the natural and cultural wonders of the Central Coast. The docent programs are a great way to invest your time in worthwhile activities, to meet people who share your interests, and to continue to learn.

Volunteer time is flexible and very much appreciated. Work at one or more of the beautiful San Luis Obispo Coast District Parks: the Pismo Nature Center and Monarch Butterfly Grove, Montaña de Oro, or the Morro Bay State Park including the Museum of Natural History.

• There are opportunities that match almost all skills and interests.
• Docents may choose to greet and assist the public at visitor centers and information desks
• Use business skills in the library, office, and Nature Stores
• Help develop exhibits and special events
• Lead interpretive nature walks and programs
• Present puppet shows and storytelling programs
• Present Living History programs
• Lead programs for visiting school and youth groups
• Maintain trails
• Write articles and publicity
• Operate audio-visual equipment
• Maintain technical equipment and exhibits
• Work in native plant gardens
• Assist with the newsletter and mass mailings

Your investment of time offers rewards such as

• A stimulating work environment with talented fellow docents
• Opportunities for lifelong learning
• Outstanding speakers and programs
• Special field trips
• A 30% discount at nature stores
• An annual State Parks day use pass for every docent contributing 200 or more hours in a calendar year.

Training is provided year-round by the Docent Council and the California State Parks. Background reading and on-the-job training are combined with a series of four Saturday workshops. All active docents are expected to average at least eight volunteer hours each month. New docents are invited to become members of the Central Coast Natural History Association.

To get started, send email to Faylla Chapman. Please include the following information:

Your name, address, phone number, the best time to call you (morning, afternoon, or evening) and the location you are interested in: Morro Bay Museum, Montaña de Oro, Pismo Nature Center, Monarch Grove Butterflies, or any location.
