Frustrated Local Writer by Rose Marie Zurkan (New Writer!)

You better get rid of that mutt. Next time I find him on my property, I’ll shoot him, and that’s a promise!” He leaned closer and poked his finger into Sam’s chest. Palooka growled and took a step forward. Sam’s neighbor moved back a step. Read More

One Poet's Perspective by Jane Elsdon

If I can say anything with great assurance, it is that our daughters know their way around antique stores, yard, and garage sales. They are both artists and crafters, therefore, they are also in love with collectibles. Collectibles — in all their forms — lend themselves well to the formation of family myths. One of our family myths revolves around a Jewel Tea percolator coffeepot. One day many years ago our family gathered to help my husband's mother, Opal, with a yard sale. Opal was affixing a $3 sticker on an autumn leaf embellished coffee pot. Our daughter, Kathy, took one look at it and shrieked, "Gr'ma, you're NOT going to sell that coffeepot for three dollars!" Opera SLO by Kathryn Bumpass

The Met Live in HD series continues in November with a new opera by the young British composer Thomas Ades (pronounced ADD-es), The Tempest. Ades was born in London in 1971 and in recent years has become something of a "phenom" in England and elsewhere. He has already composed numerous works in many different genres, and is an accomplished pianist and conductor. His first opera was Powder her Face in 1995; his second is The Tempest, premiered in 2004. Read More

Practicing Poetic Justice by Deborah Tobola

Most of the actors in Poetic Justice Project have never been onstage before coming to us.  The only "requirement" for our actors is that they have been incarcerated and wish to create a new path for their lives.

There are many challenges for people who have been incarcerated: housing, employment, family unification, and usually, substance abuse recovery. Add to this parole or probation meetings, court hearings, obtaining a driver's license, and frequent 12-step meetings. Read More

Shutterbugs, Featuring Jerry Kirkhart

My photographic journey began in the film days with this Red-shouldered Hawk photo.  After one hour following — standing, kneeling, and lying on my stomach — the RSH finally accepted me and my camera.  CLICK.  I was hooked.   Read More

Slo Coast Cooking by Elise Griffith

Since most magazines and many websites offer loads of recipes for Thanksgiving dinner, this month's column will focus on the rest of the month. Let's face it, the holidays are upon us… you want quick preparation; you need easy. If you begin with half an onion, one pound of Kielbasa, three medium potatoes and two crowns of fresh broccoli, you're well on your way to a savory, satisfying meal!
