Welcome to the Slo Coast Journal. Published online monthly, the Journal is here to bring you information specific to our part of California's Central Coast.
"Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting." Franklin D. Roosevelt
In October 1998, a young woman was reported missing to the Morro Bay Police Department. An out-of-the-area friend, who said she had been missing since 1995, reported her. The case was suspicious at the time and the Morro Bay Police conducted an investigation. Absent physical evidence and leads, the belated report was listed as a missing person and filed.
The case was periodically resurrected when the California Department of Justice (DOJ) sent out alerts to the MBPD advising of human remains found throughout the state that matched their missing by sex, age, and height. There were approximately four follow-ups by Morro Bay Police detectives with no new information gleaned. Read More

Palooka - From Our New Columnist, Rose Marie Zurkan
"You better get rid of that mutt. Next time I find him on my property, I'll shoot him, and that's a promise!" He leaned closer and poked his finger into Sam's chest. Palooka growled and took a step forward. Sam's neighbor moved back a step.
Mary and Sam adopted Palooka from the local shelter. The shelter attendant had been unable to tell them what breed he was—something big, but they could tell that for themselves--great dane or mastiff. Palooka was too big for their small house and postage stamp yard, but he wagged his tail so hard and looked so hopeful that they adopted him anyway. Read More

Shutterbugs - Featuring Don Henderson
My photographic journey began in the film days with this Red-shouldered Hawk. After one hour following — standing, kneeling, and lying on my stomach — the RSH finally accepted me and my camera. CLICK. I was hooked.
After retiring from a career as a community college counselor, my wife, Alice Cahill, and I moved to Morro Bay in 2008 to pursue our passion for nature photography. The subject matter continues to evolve, but I find great satisfaction and challenge in capturing images of landscapes, wildlife, and close-ups. I approach my work with subjects in mind, but I am constantly noticing the lighting conditions of my surroundings and asking myself, What am I being given to see at this moment? Read More |
