Save the Whales (Again) Day
Whale Conservancy

You are invited to attend a gathering to protest the resumption of commercial whaling. There will be simultaneous demonstrations in all coastal counties of California in a united attempt to ask President Obama to keep his promise to oppose whaling.

Date: May 23rd Time: 10am
Location: The Rock parking lot in Morro Bay

The purpose of the gathering is to protest the IWC proposal to remove the current moratorium on commercial whaling and allow the resumption of whaling. We will be gathering signatures on a petition to the President asking him to keep his promise to oppose whaling and direct the US delegation to the IWC to support the continuation of the moratorium

History

On April 15th the U.S. announced that it was leading an effort to broker an agreement that would allow commercial hunting of whales for the first time since a moratorium was enacted in 1986. This proposal would legalize commercial whaling and would leave enforcement of quotas to the same nations that have been in violation of the current moratorium- Japan, Iceland and Norway- and allow the killing of whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. This commercial whaling would be legalized for 10years. It also ties the current quotas on Gray Whales to the commercial quotas. Even though we know that the Gray whale population may be experiencing problems because the calf counts have been down for the past four years and dead emaciated grays are washing up on shore, these quotas would also set for 10 years without the ability to periodically review those quotas and without current population data.

This demonstration's purpose is to raise awareness of this issue and ask the US to oppose this proposal.

Cold Ceyan

Past the howling
rage filled winds of the 40’s
the hulking black ship
slides and maneuvers
into frigid
and pristine southern water

 In pursuit
bent on exacting justice
a voice for the voiceless
to champion the behemoth
gentle and ancient
  traveling history’s coarse

 Through brass and glass
early morning visions
await those who wander
cramped and mazelike spaces
  pathways to restlessness
and rages desire

Lost in thought
finding the soul
small islands pass by
seeking refuge in warm
foreign waves and latitudes
lost in ages oblivion

Craggy and fantastic
floats a sculpture
surreal dimensions and forms
belying nature’s creativity
the wonder that art
aspires to emulate

There is no other blue
a color that one feels
with every optic cell
  completely to the end
tears cannot erase
a color seared into the cortex

A ceyan palace
shapes and spaces fantasmic
overwhelming the senses
home to none
imaginations playhouse
floating, ever changing

Onward and south
one wonders
how can it be?
the rich diversity
and unimaginable beauty
a feast for hungry eyes

A ravenous soul partakes
