625 Harbor Street

Morro Bay Library

Please join us at the Morro Bay Library each Wednesday from 10 a.m. – noon in the Program Room for our regularly scheduled Readers' Community Book Discussion Group as we have the opportunity to read and discuss a spellbinding classic that still makes us think, an inspirational holiday story, and an opportunity to share your own book and favorite dish with the group.

The upcoming schedule for this month includes:

December 1 – Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser
This novel published in 1900 is an epic of city life, of transient idealists besieged by industrialism and its anonymity. Join us for discussion of this amazing classic novel.

December 8 – Wishin' and Hopin' – A Christmas Story by Wally Lamb
It's 1964 and 10-year-old Felix is sure of a few things. What can we learn from this story during this last Inspirational Wednesdays discussion of the year?

December 15 – No Assigned Book/Potluck

Discussion of non-reading list books, fiction or non-fiction or inspirational that you have found especially interesting and/or informative. Please also bring your favorite dish to feed at least eight-ten people.

All books are available for checkout in advance at the Morro Bay Library. The Fall Series Booklist is available for download at Morro Bay Friends of the Library.org or at the Library. For more information contact Wednesdays Coordinator, Karen Robert at 772-9268 or through email.

Library Book Discussion Group and Morro Bay Friends of Library

On the first and third Wednesdays, the basic readers discussion group meets to discuss books that participants have read in advance.

The second Wednesdays are "Inspirational Wednesdays," which are devoted to reviewing and discussing thought-provoking books from leading authors who are guides to change, growth and self-acceptance. It presents an opportunity for readers to reflect and enjoy the opportunity of discussing books that can help change our world for the better.

On some fourth and fifth Wednesdays, the Friends typically host local authors or artists who share their talents through readings, conversations, special presentations, demonstrations, and/or workshops.

The Morro Bay Friends of the Library which supports the Library holds regular book sales to raise funds for the library. The last book sale to be located at the Library will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2011. Members only will be admitted to the sale from 9 to 10 a.m. with the public sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A $3 per bag sale will be from 1 to 2 p.m.

Friends also provide volunteers to support library services and operations, publish a newsletter distributed throughout the community four times a year and build and maintain awareness of library needs and services throughout the community. For more information send email.
The programs are all free and open to everyone. More information on book lists, discussion dates, and/or the events schedule is available at Friends of the Library.org.

Important Changes to Note

With the signing of the lease between the City and the County, the Morro Bay Library will now be able to have full access to the Library building beginning in March 2011. This will enable the Library to expand its services, but will create some changes for some long time programs while this transition is happening.

Wednesdays Program

Beginning January 12th the weekly Wednesdays program—also known as the Morro Bay Book Discussion Group—in partnership with the Morro Bay Library, which has been meeting in the Program Room at the Library from 10 a.m. – noon, will only be meeting at the Morro Bay Library for Local Author Events (most 4th & 5th Wednesdays) unless otherwise noted on the Season Series Book Lists. All other Wednesdays programs will be at 2401 Ironwood Avenue, Morro Bay.

The Morro Bay Book Discussion Group is a free program made up of a community of readers and students of life interested in learning and exploring, who come together each Wednesday between 10 a.m. and noon to discuss books as well as have the opportunity to meet with local authors. If you like the idea of discussing books you have just read, or just want to learn more about a book before you read it, this is the place to be. Participants are welcome to come to any or all sessions.

Each 1st & 3rd Wednesday participants have a chance to read and discuss anything from the latest bestsellers, classics, traditional literature, and historical fiction, mysteries or non-fiction books. Each 2nd Wednesday—which is also known as "Share Day"—will be a chance for participants to bring and discuss non-reading list books, whether they are fiction, non-fiction, or inspirational books that they have found especially interesting and/or informative. Participants also bring their favorite dishes to share with the group. This part of the program begins in February. Most 4th & 5th Wednesdays are when a local author or artist shares their talents through readings, conversations, special presentations, demonstrations, and/or workshops. Local author events will continue to take place at the Morro Bay Library and are co-sponsored by the Morro Bay Friends of the Library.

Because the book discussion group which has been active at the library for the past five years, and is an important and popular program to the community, the Library staff wanted to be sure that the program could maintain its continuity during this changeover time. Participants will still be able to pick up the Season Series selected books as well as check them out at the Library, but the book discussions will not be held at the Morro Bay Library beginning in January.

Information and Season Series Book lists (which also clearly state which date and location the discussion is being held) will be available at the Morro Bay Library as well as at Morro Bay Book Discussion Group for download. For those interested in participating, or learning more about the program please feel free to contact the Group Facilitator, Karen Robert, at 225-3131 or through E-mail for more information.
