MORRO BAY HARBOR LOGS
FOR THE MONTH OF August, 2009
During the month of August, 2009, in addition to their normal course of duties the Morro Bay Harbor Patrol responded to 130 calls for service, including 10 true emergencies. Patrol personnel engaged in 23 enforcement actions and 73 maintenance actions. Highlights include:
Saturday, August 1
·Emergency response to the sailing vessel Soaring Eagle, which lost power approximately four miles southwest of the harbor entrance. She was towed back to the harbor without incident.
Sunday, August 2
·In a day for the animals, Harbor Patrol personnel towed three dead sea lions out of the bay, took one report of a shark sighting off of Cayucos, and warned a group of children to stop throwing rocks at seagulls and otters at Target rock. Their parents were counseled as well.
Monday, August 3
·Conducted vessel-based emergency response and lifeguarding training with the Cayucos Junior Lifeguard program participants. Kids were instructed in basic boating safety, safely exiting a vessel to the water and entering back on, and getting a mock victim from the water onto a vessel.
Tuesday, August 4
·Conducted Junior Lifeguard boating operations emergency training, this time with the Morro Bay program.
·Responded to a report of a “confused teenager” loitering around the public restroom at the north T-Pier. After Police and Harbor personnel questioned the youth, it was determined that he was not a minor nor was any crime committed.
·Provided some basic first aid to a teen with a scrape on his leg from a skateboarding fall.
Thursday, August 6
·Urgent response to two vessels outside the harbor in very thick fog and unsure of where they were. The first made their way back to the harbor just as the Harbor Patrol arrived at the entrance, while the second was located some distance outside and totally lost. The boat was escorted back in, then a third vessel, a sailboat this time, was assisted in finding the entrance as well.
Saturday, August 8
·Emergency response to a report of an overturned kayaker near the south T-Pier. A 62-year old San Luis Obispo man was plucked from the water, but refused further assistance.
Sunday, August 9
·Received a report of three stolen kayaks from a local rental agency and the whereabouts of their possible location. They were located tied up in the bay, but with nobody around nor any clues as to who took them.
Tuesday, August 11
·Conducted a lien sale auction on the derelict sailing vessel Pocket Mouse II. Not surprisingly, there were no takers, and the vessel will eventually be demolished.
·Relayed a call to the Coast Guard from a small recreational vessel broken down off of the Abalone Farm north of Cayucos. They located and towed it back to Morro Bay.
Wednesday, August 12
·Dewatered the sailing vessel Cat’s Paw at the request of the marina manager where the vessel is kept.
Friday, August 14
·Rearranged numerous vessels at the north T-Pier to make room for other vessels and make better use of the available space.
·Took a report of approximately 700-800 gallons of diesel fuel having been apparently stolen from a commercial fishing vessel at the north T-Pier. The matter is being investigated.
·Assisted a citizen get into her vehicle, where her keys were locked inside. Chucks Towing was called to get in.
·After-hours call out for a report of three overdue/missing males ages 14, 16, and 21 from a kayaking outing. Prior to Harbor Patrol or Coast Guard response, the three showed up safe and sound.
Saturday, August 15
·Emergency response to a report of a 63-year old male having seizures on the fishing vessel Saint Joseph at the north T-Pier. The victim was stabilized until Morro Bay Fire paramedics arrived and took over. He was transported to the hospital.
·Emergency response to a report of a swimmer in distress off of Morro Strand State Park. Responding units were stood-down prior to arrival as the victim made it safely to shore on his own.
Friday, August 21
·Assisted Morro Bay lifeguards with a surfer with a possible ruptured eardrum at the Rock. A friend transported him to a doctor for evaluation.
Sunday, August 23
·Advised some scuba divers near Coleman Beach inside the harbor to use a dive flag and to stay out of the navigation channel, as the bay cruise vessel Chablis reported nearly hitting them.
·Assisted with and participated in all-County SWAT training exercise that consisted of vessel and pier enforcement operations, search and seizures, and water safety familiarization of team members.
Tuesday, August 25
·Emergency response to the sailing vessel Osprey broken down in the channel off of Tidelands dock. She was towed back to her mooring without incident.
Friday, August 28
·Emergency response to a call from a recreational vessel broken down outside the harbor with a possible medical aid on board. Arriving on scene one mile south of the entrance, Harbor Patrol personnel discovered nobody in need of medical attention, but the boat was in need of a tow. She was brought back to the launch ramp.
Saturday, August 29
·Emergency response to a report of a female surfer in trouble at the Rock. Beach lifeguards just coming on duty responded to her and brought her back to the beach without incident.
Sunday, August 30
·Found and later returned a lost wallet to its owner. It was lost on a public dock.
·Emergency response to a report of the moored motor vessel Kenneth II low in the bow. She was dewatered and the owner notified. No apparent active leaks were noted.
Monday, August 31
·Urgent response to the transient sailing vessel Francess W without steering off of the south T-Pier. She was safely taken in tow and moored to another vessel at the pier.
