Record High Temperatures on the Central Coast

With Morro Bay hitting 99 degrees on August 28, we coast clingers were suffering. The high heat lasted only a couple of days, but we didn't suffer silently. While most citizens just complained in amazement and discomfort, one required a little drama to mark the day.

The seemingly tireless Dr. Curt Beebe met his match in the guise of unusually high heat in Montana de Oro. While doing a bit of trail work, he was overcome by the 102 degree temperature and had to be helicopter lifted from the top of Oats Peak to a waiting ambulance near Spooner's Cove. Dr. Beebe was taken to Sierra Vista Hospital emergency room, where he was rehydrated and released.

Dr. Beebe has volunteered for 10 years for State Parks, putting in about 1,000 hours a year. He is the leader of the "Black Hill Gang," a group of eight men who volunteer every week to do trail maintenance. Dr. Beebe is a member of the State Parks Recreational Trails Committee and works closely with both the bike and horse community at Montana de Oro. Not only does the Gang do trail maintenance, but Curt plans and writes proposals for new trails. Wife Sandra, a columnist for the Journal, says, "Curt always wanted to live close to a state or national park, so this has been a dream come true for him. He feels he is privileged to be allowed to volunteer at Montana de Oro."
