Water/Sewage Plant Proposed at New Site

by Jack McCurdy

Jack McCurdy

It's been seven years since Morro Bay and Cayucos began planning a new water/sewage plant (now called a "water reclamation facility" because of the new emphasis on the generation of recycled water by such a plant) and finally, in the next couple of months, the planning is expected to be put into action as the outline of the plant takes shape. The election of Jamie Irons, Christine Johnson, and Noah Smukler (reelection) last year got the ball moving after years of foot-dragging by previous Councils. Come next February the community will learn exactly what, when, and where a new facility lies in store. Read More

People Are Asking: Who are the Recallers?

by Jack McCurdy

Who are the recallers? More and more people in Morro Bay seem to be asking that question, confounded by the vitriol and false charges that have been hurled against Mayor Jamie Irons. Who would do that in a small, friendly, and pleasant community like Morro Bay? One thing is clear: the people seeking to recall Irons are not your common folk of Morro Bay. Read More

Recalls in Morro Bay: Then and Now

By Gene Shelton

After moving to Morro Bay in 1969, I began to look more closely at the community with the thought of finding out how this bustling coastal village worked. It was then, as it is today, a delightful place to live, and it didn't take long to discover an undercurrent of energetic political interest and activity.

I met a local businessman and former city councilman, Joe Giannini, who proved to be a reliable source of information. He had a vivid memory and excellent recall and became a friend and reliable source of information from then until his death at 94 years of age. Read More

Family Programs Featured at Upcoming Local Bird Festival

Morro Bay Winter Bird Festival gears up with more activities for families over the Martin Luther King weekend.  This year a family program opens Saturday, January 18 at the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History from 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. offering a range of activities from fun, short birding hikes to a puppet show, kayaking on the bay, and more. Events are free to children. Admission for adults is $3.00.

Pacific Wildlife Care will offer two shows featuring live raptors — owls, hawks, and falcons — on Saturday afternoon. Educational birds that can't be rehabilitated due to injury will be on view to demonstrate the role of raptors in the environment. Meet a Red-tailed Hawk, a Great Horned Owl, and other raptors up close and personal. The hour-long shows are held at Morro Bay Veteran's Hall on Surf Street at 1:30p.m. and 3:00 p.m. A donation of $2 is requested. Children under 12 are free.

Another Bird Festival program open to the public spotlights Peregrine Falcons. On Sunday, January 19, Glenn Stewart of the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Program presents an hour-long illustrated program, the Peregrine Recovery Story, beginning  at 3:30p.m. at Morro Bay Community Center. Bring a camera to photograph the live falcon. A small fee ($2) will be charged to adults and children over age 12. No pre-registration is necessary for these programs. For more information go to the Morro Bay Bird Festival website:  Morro Bay Bird Festival.

Possum

Shutterbugs by Devra Cooper

Carrying a camera in my pocket and discovering the fun of documenting life through the lens opened a whole new world to me.  My camera has become my friend and almost constant companion. It helps me to slow down, see the world in a different way and be more appreciative of the wonders all around me.

One of my favorite things is to take the camera and go for a ride, my preference being dirt roads where I can stop whenever I see something interesting.  Nature photography — owls and hawks, especially — interests me most.  I love the challenge of finding a Great Horned Owl and taking a photo I can share with friends.  Read More
