Central Coast Flora

by Roe Yeager

1

I so love walking the streets of Morro Bay and the surrounding communities. There is such an abundance of flora. Lots of flowers are in pots and planters and many others are planted in yards. And then there are bunches everywhere else that are probably there, in part, thanks to the birds.

I used to notice the flowers. However, my appreciation truly came to light as I began walking almost everywhere I went. It is so much better up close and personal with the incredible variety of flowers everywhere. How grateful I am that so many shop owners choose to dress up their store fronts with pots and planters of all shapes and sizes. And then fill them with so many beautiful flower and succulents.

Some of the colors are almost iridescent while others are more subdued. There is an amazing quantity of colors. While in a nursery recently one of the master gardeners said that there is no such color as purple. They are all considered shades of blue. I don't know about others perception, however, I see purple! I think.

And I was unaware of the huge variety of succulents available and almost everywhere in the area. Many I had never seen before. This past early spring there were some of them blooming which the owners said had not ever done so — a most wonderful surprise for all of us.

I am unable to even pretend that I know the names of most of the flowers I have encountered. I know the rose, geranium, pansy, jasmine, honeysuckle, and many more of the more present flowers, though so many others that I love and enjoy seeing are unnamed for me. I am alright with this, since I can enjoy them anyway.

These pictures were taken at the Morro Dunes Motor Home Park in Morro Bay, California. Gotta love the California State Flower, the Golden Poppy.
