Museum of Natural History and State Park Happenings
The Morro Bay Museum of Natural History has an exhibit on fossils. It is only on display until May 9, so if you haven’t been to see it, come on by in the next few days.
Wildflowers are blooming in all our area State Parks. Late rains have really brought on the bloom. From the trails at Morro Bay State Park to Islay Creek Road and the Bluff Trail at Montana de Oro, flowers are everywhere. Enjoy!
2012 is the 50th anniversary of the Museum’s opening. An exhibit of historic photos is on display in the Museum auditorium, and a special exhibit of photos featuring our "Golden Treasures" will be there from May 12-July 15.
The Sea Otter Experience trailer will be at Morro Rock during weekend days this summer, starting on Saturday, June 16, from 11:00 AM-3:00 PM. The Solstice event will be held at the Morro Bay State Park picnic area, also from 11:00 AM-3:00 PM.
State Park Docents and staff offer guided nature walks and lectures all year long, from short family-oriented strolls to strenuous hikes to lectures by recognized local experts. You may pick up a copy of a printd schedule at the Museum of Natural History, Spooner Ranch House at Montana de Oro, or the Pismo Nature Center. For further information, please check the website of Central Coast State Parks Association, our non-profit Park partner organization, via CCSPA.
Of particular interest to anyone who loves animals: MCAS Community Program, Monday May 21, 7:00pm at SLO Botanical Gardens Oak Glen Pavillion in El Chorro Regional Park. Read More
Stop State Parks Closures
CCSPA hosted the premiere of "California Forever" a couple of weeks ago at Hearst Castle. While we saw the beautiful gems of individual parks -- like the deserts of Anza-Borrego, the Redwoods, and our own Montana de Oro and Morro Strand -- we were reminded that all of these parks make up a system. These beautiful islands were saved for us - sometimes by just one person who said, "I can't let this happen."
This land is too important to all of us.
As you are enjoying your parks, remember to look up and see the beauty of the entire system of 278 State Parks. Then consider that 70 of these are slated for permanent closure by July 1.
Write to or call your legislators, Senator Sam Blakeslee (phone: 805-549-3779l) and Assemblymember Katcho Achadjian (phone: 805 549-3381, email). Let them know it's their responsibility to find a permanent solution to keep all of the garden open.
This land is too important for all of us. Don’t let this happen.
