Book Sale Book Sale Book Sale

May brings another amazing Friends of the Library Used Book Sale fundraiser!  The MBFOL has partnered with Rideshare in honor of Bike Month for a fun activity called Bike to the Books!  Ride your bike to the book sale on Saturday, May 5 and receive a Bike Buck (value $1) to use at the sale on that day.  Every member of the family who arrives by bike will receive one.  Don’t miss out---bike to the books!

Can you make a difference for a young reader by supporting the countywide Children's Summer Reading Program?  Children who sign up to read are given a free book at the end of the summer! If you'd like to help, donations are accepted via PayPal, by credit card at the Foundation for San Luis Obispo Public Libraries secure website, www.slolibraryfoundation.org or by calling 805-546-1392.

Here’s what’s happening in May.

Wednesdays

May 2, 10 a.m. – Noon, A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan

Bennie is an aging former punk rocker and record executive. Sasha is the passionate, troubled young woman he employs. The inner lives of a host of other characters whose paths intersect with theirs will be introduced. Will this be a novel of self-destruction and redemption?

May 9 10 a.m. – Noon, Outliers – The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell

Join us during our special topics Wednesday discussion as we review Malcolm Gladwell’s provocative question in Outliers: why do some people succeed, living remarkably productive and impactful lives, while so many more never reach their potential? What can we learn from his research and conclusions?

May 16, 10 a.m. – Noon, Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls

So begins the story of Lily Casey Smith, Jeannette Walls’s no-nonsense, resourceful, and spectacularly compelling grandmother.

By age six, Lily was helping her father break horses. At fifteen, she left home to teach in a frontier town—riding five hundred miles on her pony, alone, to get to her job. She learned to drive a car and fly a plane. Learn more about her incredible life’s journey.

May 23 beginning @ 10 a.m. 4th Wednesdays @ the Movies Queen of Hearts (82 minutes) – French with English subtitles

Thirty-something Adele is devastated after a painful breakup. With no close friends or family, her distant cousin, Rachel, reluctantly takes her in and graciously attempts to salvage Adele's personal and professional lives. Rachel finds her a job and suggests that Adele sleep with other men to get over her heartbreak. Adele bounces from one lover to the next in search of her perfect companion but can't escape the visage of her ex. Finally, she recognizes the man who may just hold the answer to her broken heart.

May 25, 10 a.m. - Noon Join Us for our4th Fridays Mystery Readers Group as we read and discuss The Silent Spirit by Margaret Coel

In 1923, Charlie is recruited to appear as an extra in a silent film, but he never returns home. Years later Charlie's great-grandson, goes to uncover the truth behind his great-grandfather's disappearance, but he is murdered. Now they must find the connection between two deaths separated by nearly a century.

Saturdays

May 5, from9 to 10 a.m.with the public salefrom10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friends of the Library Book Sale at the Morro Bay Community Center. Bike to the Books! Members only will be admitted to the sale A $3 per bag sale will be from 1 to 2 p.m. All bike riders will receive a bike buck sponsored by Rideshare in honor of Bike Month!

Saturday, May 12, 11 a.m. - Noon "Swingin with Dean" '40s - '70s Music Extravaganza!

The hardest working one-man band in show business is coming to the Morro Bay Library. Dean Ratzman is bringing his highly polished act - "The Swinging With Dean Show" - to the library for a concert. Dean will sing and play "Hits from the Great American Artists" including Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Cole Porter, Ray Charles, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Buddy Holly, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Young Rascals, Neil Diamond, The Temptations, Santana, and Gary Puckett. You won't want to miss it!

Saturday, May 19, 10 a.m. - Noon Writer's Support Group with local author Robert Hyde

The Writer's Support Group is here to lend support, accountability and encouragement for your writing projects - especially if you are interested in self-publishing. Bring your writing samples. More information: 772-2657
