Morro Bay Book Discussion Groups, Friends of the Library, and Other Library Program News for July

by Christine Johnson

Morro Bay Library

Summertime is in full swing at the Morro Bay Library!  All these extra hours of summer sunlight make it the perfect time to read more books and join in the discussion at one of our adult reading programs.  Also, make sure to sign-up the children in your life for the Summer Reading Program when you come to the Library.

Morro Bay Friends of the Library have many exciting plans to help support your library.  All we need is Y O U to join us.  Become a Friends' member (applications are at the Library) then let us know how you can help.  We are in need of members to assist with membership, fund raising, public relations and our website.

We are specifically looking for a few dedicated volunteers to coordinate our Farmers' Market Book Sales on Saturdays.  These sales are fantastic revenue generators for your Morro Bay Library.  You do need to be able to carry boxes and set-up tables.  It's always fun to chat with folks you know and to meet the many visitors to Morro Bay that shop at the market, as well.

Be in touch if are ready to be a part of our dynamic Friends of the Library organization.  Contact me, Christine Johnson.

Here's what's happening in July at your Morro Bay Library.

Wednesdays

Morro Bay Book Discussion Group meets Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to Noon in the John Kim Room at the Morro Bay Library.

Join us in July as we have the opportunity to enjoy what it feels like to be a kid again! We will read juvenile books and learn how to make healthy fun with one of our very own dynamic local authors.

July 6, 10 a.m. - Noon  Encyclopedia Brown Boy Detective – Book 1
Leroy Brown is Idaville's 10-year old star detective. With an uncanny knack for trivia, he solves mysteries for the neighborhood kids through his own detective agency, and even helps his dad, who happens to be the Chief of Police.

July 13, 10 a.m. - Noon  Deceptively Delicious by Jessica Seinfeld
The author offers a program that gets kids to eat their vegetables - without them knowing! For the first time in our book discussion group history, we have a chance to discuss a cookbook!  Shall we even share a few of her dishes with each other as well?

July 20, 10 a.m. - Noon A Long Way from Chicago by Richard Peck
Set in the 1930s, the book follows Joe and Mary Alice Dowdel as they make their annual August trek to visit their grandmother who lives in a sleepy Illinois town somewhere between Chicago and St. Louis. A woman with plenty of moxie, she keeps to herself, a difficult task in this small community. Grandma Dowdel embodies not only the heart of a small town but the spirit of an era gone by.

July 27, 10 a.m. - Noon  Meet Local Author & Free Workshop with Joan Martin Fee “Make Healthy Fun”
Make healthy fun is all about using creativity to get kids to exercise, eat healthy and unplug without them knowing it! Join the author as she shares some of her ideas that will not only motivate the kids, but adults as well! Both children and adults are welcome as we have the chance to try out some of her creative play activities included in her latest book.
