ENCAUSTIC PAINTING

… and Additional Exciting Art-Happenings About Town

by Jayne Behman

Encaustic
Sara Heinrichs entitled "Ourselves"  - Encaustic, Photography, and Wood Shellac on Wood

Encaustic painting is an ancient medium enjoying a renaissance.  A mixture of pure beeswax and damar resin, encaustic wax, often mixed with pigment, is applied molten (temperatures approaching 200 degrees) and worked with heat tools like hot plates, heat guns, torches, even irons.  Beautiful layering effects can be achieved, especially when incorporating photography.  From richly textured abstract encaustic landscapes to image transfers, carving, scraping, and layering, artists working in this medium today show us the possibilities with this fascinating medium.

A juried exhibition, "Consequential Fusion: Messages in Wax," will be hosted by Art Center Morro Bay, July 7 through August 14. All participants are members of International Encaustic Artists (IEA), a 380 member organization spanning three continents, including 34 states and five Canadian provinces. The jurors are Dane Goodman, Director of the Atkinson Gallery at Santa Barbara City College, Santa Barbara, Michael Miller, Art Professor at California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, and Daniella Woolf, encaustic artist, teacher, and author.   Flo Bartell, President of Art Center- Morro Bay, is the coordinator and is an IEA member.   Encaustic is an increasingly popular medium and this exhibit offers an opportunity to see awide variety of encaustic art in one venue. One local artists, Margaret Bertrand of Los Osos, as paintings accepted for the exhibit.

The opening reception and awards presentation will be July 10 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. Contact Flo Bartell 805 528-7983 for more information.

SLoMa's McMeen  Push Pin exhibition begins with the Artist Reception on July 1st, which continues through July 31st.  This too is an invitational showcase, without a theme.  Works presented are unframed and displayed with Push Pins.

Shell Beach's Dolfin Bay Resort offers a new venue to local artists thanks to designer, Cindy Dakovich, who has the exclusive honor to display local artists on the prestigious walls by its Lido restaurant area.  Currently on display are large paintings by Patti Robbins and Jayne Behman.

It has been a great pleasure to keep the arts alive through this monthly article. I am grateful to Judy Sullivan, editor, for believing in me as a writer, and hopeful that in the near future my schedule will permit me to continue to keep the arts in the forefront.
