Mary's Gold
(Flowers once offered as coins to the Virgin)
Driving down the highway
an orange line on the horizon
becomes a field of marigolds,
rows and rows of blooms
planted to parent blossoms
around the world.
And now in June they create
a California gold rush.

Sightseeing
A trio of tipsy pals
play with their pups
in a Dublin park.
One dances with his dog
cradled in his arms,
sings rock-a-bye baby.
We share a bench
with two dowagers
who scowl disapproval,
tell us to go nearby,
see Shakespeare in the Park,
avoid these men who make
much ado about nothing.

Bedtime
At seven
I cuddle under the covers,
seeking safety from the dark
awareness of being alone.
In the noise of silence
I wait for the sleep train
to sweep me away.
At seventy,
I cuddle under the covers,
seeking safety in the stark
awareness of being alone.
In the noise of silence,
I wait for the sleep train
to sweep me away.

Effervescence
On a promenade in downtown Dublin
a sorcerer stirs sticks and string in suds--
bubbles wobble forth, but burst.
A girl follows one after another,
giggles, jumps, reaches—
rapt in wonder.
