Watch for upcoming authors to listen to and meet--notable literary figures living right here among us. Future author events are available at the Friends website, Morro Bay Friends of the Library.
Friends also holds the "Readers' Community Book Discussion Group" meetings at the library on the first and third Wednesdays of the month.
These gatherings are held on the second Wednesday of the month when particularly thought-provoking books are discussed.
Everyone is invited to listen to the discussions in the library or to join the invigorating discussions as group members. Discussion books are provided.
For questions about the Wednesdays program or the Friends activities, contact Friends President Karen Robert at 772-9268.
The Morro Bay Friends of the Library, which has been actively supporting the Morro Bay Public Library for more than 25 years, will review accomplishments of the past year and discuss significant needs--especially at this time of reductions in financial support of libraries--and challenges in the near future on Friday, November 20, starting at 11:30 a.m. when the Friends hold their annual board of directors elections. The meeting will be in the Library Room of the Library, 625 Harbor Street.
The just-announced retirement of Jude Sanner Long, Morro Bay's popular, long-time librarian, is sure to be a topic of discussion at the gathering, although her service of nearly 35 years with the San Luis Obispo County Library System will be marked with a formal celebration on January 24 at the library.
The meeting and program is open to the public and will include a free continental lunch on a first come, first served basis. The more than 300 Friends members are urged to attend to vote for officers. A quorum of members is needed to elect officers of the board.
"Some very exciting announcements" will be made at the meeting, Friends president Karen Robert said in the organization's fall, 2009, newsletter.
The continental lunch will be followed by a program featuring two Morro Bay chefs, Kirk Sowell of Frankie & Lola's restaurant and Shawn Washburn of Shawn's on Main. Participants will have the opportunity to taste some of their cuisine as well as learn about their experiences, behind the scenes stories, mishaps, having fun cooking, tricks of success with food, and more.
"If you have never come to a Friends meeting before, or if it has been a while since you have attended one, we really want you to come to this one!" Robert said of Friends members.
The support that Friends provides for the library is invaluable, and, as Robert noted, "It only takes one person to make a difference--and that person could be you."
Friends of the Library hosts book discussion groups on the first and third Wednesdays of the month, discussions on inspirational topics on the second Wednesday and readings by local authors and special presentations toward a celebration and appreciation of literature on most fourth Wednesdays. John Steinbeck, the Nobel Prize-winning author, who chronicled so many classic stories about California and its people, will be the topic of discussion on November 4 (his book "Sweet Thursday") and 18 (his book "Travels with Charley In Search of America").
Friends also holds regular book sales to raise funds for the library (the upcoming one is Saturday, November 7 from 10am to 2pm with Friends members allowed to come one hour earlier at 9-10am), provide volunteers to support library services and operations, publishes a newsletter distributed throughout the community four times a year, and builds and maintains awareness of library needs and services throughout the community.
