One of the real treasures we have here on the central coast is Montaňa de Oro State Park, located just outside of Los Osos. There are many recreational activities available at the park but today we are going to talk about utilizing the many hiking trails to increase our physical fitness. Read More
Best Friends by Malcolm Riordan, DVM
"He's just slowing down." "Oh, she's just getting older." In tossing out these blanket clichés, you might be turning your older dog out to pasture years before their time! Lessening activity, slowness, stiffness, reluctance to/or difficulty getting up can be signs of arthritis. Read More
Body, Mind, Spirit by Nancy Ballinger
It was an incredibly dark night (even by Saskatchewan standards) when I stepped out of the safety of the well-lit room filled with soft voices. As I prepared myself to begin the arduous trek through the maze of dense forest, someone touched my arm and asked, "May I help you find your way tonight?" Read More
Critter Care by Elizabeth Henderson
When most people think of rats, their minds conjure up images of disease carrying pests that live in sewers. While rats can, like any animal, carry disease, and some wild rats do live in sewers or steal grain when they are hungry, domesticated rats make wonderful pets. Domesticated rats have been selectively bred for thousands of generations and, though still the same species, have many differences from their wild counterparts. They are calmer, come in a variety of beautiful colors, live longer, are generally healthier, and are more comfortable around humans. Read More

Eureka, we've found it! After two tries, 3rd Street Bakery is a reality, not just some fantastic bread place that everyone is raving about - open sometimes, closed sometimes, but well worth the search or the wait. Yes, this hot spot is the main reason some folks come to Los Osos. Located at 1229 3rd Street in the Village of Baywood Park, the artisan breads are available most Saturdays from 9am to 1pm and selected other days prior to some holidays as a favor to customers. If in doubt, call (805) 704–1496. Read More
Gordon & Zoud's Excellent Journey to Maui, Hawaii
We arrived in Kahului on Maui from Los Angeles on Wednesday - Gordon from San Francisco and I from Los Angeles. Even our luggage arrived with us! We picked up our rental car and headed across the island to the coastal town of Lahaina, just 20 miles west and north of the airport. Having previously lived on Maui for over three years, I pointed out local landmarks and "sights-to-see" as we drove along. Read More

Medical Myth Busting by Dr. Steven Sainsbury
Head trauma can be very scary. We tend to remain calm for the more common injuries, such as broken bones or lacerations. After all, they do not pose a risk to our most precious organ, the brain. But even a minor blow to the head often creates a sense of panic in everyone connected to the event. Read More
Morro Musings by Janice Peters
When we are children, the holidays are all about receiving gifts . . . the list, the visit to Santa, the fascination of the pretty packages, and the excitement of opening them. Somewhere along the line, not too long after we find out Santa's true identity, the focus changes from receiving to giving, and the gifts we give bring us equal or greater pleasure than those we receive. From Jane Beyman's Eat No Sugar Blog: Cube peeled butternut squash and place in shallow glass pan with a small amount of water on the bottom. Sprinkle nutmeg and cinnamon on top and dizzel with a sugar free sweetener (I use Agave nectar). Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes (test for tenderness) Read More

View From the Lineup
So when I paddled out for a surf later that morning, my razor sharp senses and blazing intellect got together and concluded that a new wetsuit would be a really good thing. You see, we like to call it "surfing," but in reality, much of the time it could easily be called "sitting" or else "paddling." We spend most of our time paddling through the surf, paddling to stay in the lineup if there is a lot of current, and sitting, waiting for the waves to arrive - ll in very cold water. So, here on the central coast a good wetsuit can conceivably be more important than your surfboard. You could have the best surfboard in the world, but if it is too cold to paddle out, it will stay in the car. Read More
