Art Talk by Jayne Behman
Rewarding costume-clad kids with candy (Trick or Treat) hadn't even begun when wreaths and garlands began to be retail displays. More than two weeks before Thanksgiving, streets became illuminated with strings of lights and store windows burst with motorized waving Santas, festive wrappings, and Chanukah menorahs. Few houses begin to twinkle . . a tiny preview of what's to come. For me, pre-Thanksgiving is too premature to consider who's naughty and nice. In addition, early "tis the season" bustle always seems to diminish the true spirit of Thanksgiving. Read More
Beyond the Badge by Richard Hannibal
We on the central coast live in paradise. No one appreciates that more than me. In another life I was a cop working a high crime area in Los Angeles County. I barely got out of there alive, both mentally and physically. There is a thick fog of negativity in these neighborhoods that affects everyone it contacts; including the folks who live there and the folks who "serve and protect." In this work environment a police officer literally goes to war every day and then must maintain mental balance at the end of the shift when he or she returns to the normalcy of a home, spouse, and kids. The Morro Photo Expo event was a three day event that occurred on the 23rd, 24th, and 25th of October. This event was attended by 162 photographers from as far away as San Francisco, and even some from out of state. Approximately 47% were local. During the Expo, photographers were able to take many classes on how to use their cameras. Instructors were from the Photomorrobay group, the Light Photographic Institute, Sullivan Studios, Digital Photo Walk Instructors, and the SLO Camera Club. There were two days of photography workshops and an entire day workshop by George Lepp, whose subject was "Fulfilling the Promise of Digital Photography." Read More and See the Winning Shots

As 2009 draws to a wintery close, I cannot imagine a more fitting sentiment nor tribute to the majestic California Central Coast than that so aptly expressed by one of the world's greatest nature photographers, Jim Brandenburg. For in this, the most juxtapositional of seasons – from grand holiday celebrations to moments of quiet reflection – the profound significance of our intricate connection to each other and the natural world is most keenly palpable. The approach of the winter solstice signifies not only the shortest day of the year as the sun ebbs away, but also the time for ritual, reflection, and rebirth. In keeping with this tradition, the local photography community will host events ranging from a screening of Jim Brandenburg's infamous Chased by the Light documentary film, to collective group receptions, holiday celebrations, and a year-end photo competition showcasing its best work.
