MORRO PHOTO EXPO 2009 - Reportby Jerry KirkhartThe Morro Photo Expo event was a three day event that occurred on the 23rd, 24th, and 25th of October. This event was attended by 162 photographers from as far away as San Francisco, and even some from out of state. Approximately 47% were local. During the Expo, photographers were able to take many classes on how to use their cameras. Instructors were from the Photomorrobay group, the Light Photographic Institute, Sullivan Studios, Digital Photo Walk Instructors, and the SLO Camera Club. There were two days of photography workshops and an entire day workshop by George Lepp, whose subject was "Fulfilling the Promise of Digital Photography." All the participants were invited to submit photos taken during the three day event. The photos were then submitted to a Flickr group set up by Mike Baird and Howard Ignatius. A committee of judges reviewed all the entries. The photos below were the top choices. Dallis Richardson was the event winner with her "Rock Fog" photo, taken during the sunset photography class. For taking first place, she received a beautiful print, donated by George Lepp, and bragging rights. Dallis is from Los Osos. She has a unique knack of giving her images some very fun and descriptive titles, which you can enjoy when you visit her site. (Click on any image below to visit the photographer's Flickr pages.) First Place
Dallis's winning entry was taken with an 18 mm lens and 1/30th of a second and f/10 using aperture priority. It was so interesting that the marine layer was so thick. There was concern that there would be no opportunity to get a photograph. Then all of a sudden, the layer cleared long enough to light up the sky. Just look at the result. Patience sure paid off, to the delight of all. Second Place
Mark's excellent Gull at Sunset was taken at the Morro Strand Sunset Class. He used a 70 mm lens with f/8.0 and a 1/640th shutter speed. Mark is from Yorba Linda, California.
Vanessa just joined the Flickr group this October 2009. She has a real talent for composition, which is seen in this fine photograph. She indeed will have much to offer in the future. Her exposure was 1/200 at f/14 using a 24 mm lens. It is interesting that all the winner photographs for this year came were taken on Morro Strand, just north of Morro Rock.
