Open House to Reveal Morro Bay Library Improvement Plans

The community will get a look into the future when the Morro Bay Library presents plans for its major remodeling campaign during an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 14. Visitors will get a chance to tour the library and see proposed changes that will create more usable space and a more open, friendly atmosphere. The redesign will also allow for the inclusion of new technology, both now and in the future.

Architect Shana Reiss, who developed the redesign plan, will be on hand to explain how slated improvements will create a more efficient and more welcoming environment. Reiss is a Cal Poly graduate based in Paso Robles. She is accredited by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and has extensive experience with green design principles and the creation of  environmentally friendly spaces. Brummel Mechanical Engineering and Heather Gray from GECE consulted on the updated mechanical and electrical systems that will be incorporated in the new design.

Guests at the free open house will get a sneak peek at plans for the new interior as they walk through the library and compare the existing space to architectural renderings of how it will look in the future. In addition to food, fun and entertainment, there will be an array of unique raffle items for adults. Each of the first 100 children to visit the open house will receive a free book.

The Morro Bay Friends of the Library is spearheading a fundraising campaign, which is well past the halfway mark in reaching its $500,000 goal for the project. To learn more about donating to the remodeling project, including individual and group naming opportunities, go to Morro Bay Friends of the Library

The Adult Winter Reading Winter Program, "Hot Reads for Cold Nights!," ends Tuesday, April 16. Did you read at least nine books and add it to your list so you could be eligible for the prize drawing? If so, don't forget to turn in your completed form to the staff so you can be entered into the drawing!

* Any packaged item may be exchanged for up to $1.00 off existing fines and hold fees, but NOT lost or damaged fines/fees nor collections charges. Because we have no way to "bank" funds on a patron account, food cannot be used to pay for possible future charges.

* If a fine is $4.25 or $4.50 or $4.75, it takes five food items to pay it off — and we DO NOT give change. Library staff can accept a combination of food and cash. For example, four cans of food and a quarter (25 cents) to pay a $4.25 fine. Of course no one is required to have money owing to contribute food, and all food received will go directly to the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County.

* There isn't a dollar limit per patron, because there is no way for staff to track that on a patron's record.

* The Food Bank Coalition wish list includes scanned vegetables or fruit, pasta, soup, beans, peanut butter, dry soup, and other non-perishable items. Please note: All items are appreciated, but low sodium, low sugar, and whole grains contribute to better health.
