Earth Day - State Parks

On Saturday, April 13, thousands of Californians will gather together at select state parks across the state to improve trails, install railings, paint, renovate campsites, restore wildlife habitats, and pick up trash and debris for CSPF's
16th Annual Earth Day Restoration and Cleanup presented by PG&E.

Year after year we have held this state-wide volunteer day as a way to show our commitment to our planet and our parks. This year, we have environmental improvement projects planned at 24
state parks, and we need volunteers.

Open spots are still available in San Luis Obispo County. If you'd like to volunteer at a park like Montaña de Oro State Park, please check out our volunteer registration page. Volunteers must pre-register for Earth Day. We hope to see you there!

Shots Fired

by Richard Hannibal

They say you never hear the gunshot that kills you . . . Sergeant Jeff Andrews was having that thought when the windshield of his patrol car erupted in an explosion of flying glass. Read More

This "waiting room" is in Morro Bay. Can you place it and tell us what people who use it are waiting for? If so, write to Judy with your answer. One lucky person who gets it right will win a signed copy of local author Vicki Leon's book, "The Joy of Sexus."

Morro Bay, Cayucos May Have to Go to Prison to Build WWTP

by Jack McCurdy

Jack McCurdy

First Morro Bay and the Cayucos Sanitary District building their own individual new sewage plants got on the table. Now use of the California Men's Colony between San Luis Obispo and Cuesta College to process sewage from Morro Bay and possibly Cayucos is being eyed. And there also appears to be a possibility that the county may step in to operate the Men's Colony sewage plant for Morro Bay and Cayucos and turn it into a county project. How long can all this drag on without penalties from the state? No one is quite sure. Read More

Did A State Agency Conspire with So Cal Edison
to Promote Reliance on Nuclear Power?

Just weeks after Fukushima, and at the same time an initiative was filed to close our state's nuclear power plants, Edison Mission Energy (EME), an affiliate of Southern California Edison, the major owner of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS), filed with the Energy Commission to both buy and retire the only backup generation that existed for SONGS, thus locking California into a nuclear power-dependent future. Why would the owner of SONGS want to buy and retire the only backup generation for its nuclear plants just weeks after the worst nuclear accidents in history? Why would both the Energy Commission and the PUC approve such a retirement? Read More

Shutterbugs - Featuring Ken Bondy

My photographic specialty is underwater photography. However, I do occasionally take a picture above water.  It is impossible not to notice and photograph the incredible topside beauty of the Central Coast — the gorgeous coastline, the stunning flower fields that bloom along Los Osos Valley Road in the late summer, the bird life, the otters, and the elephant seals.  While not at the level of many local landscape and nature photographers, my topside photography has improved over the years, mainly because of my experiences on the Central Coast.  Read More

Jody Mulgrew: Local Native Rocketing to the Top

by Dawn R. Starr

Jody Mulgrew has come full circle — returning to his home turf of the Central Coast, where he woos audiences with his stirring vocals and deftly-played guitar.  He performs solo, as well as in a number of groups, including Jody Mulgrew and the Skeleton Crew, and the Girls and Boys. He also enjoys writing music and performing with other individual musicians. Jody performs many of his own songs with his music being influenced by Sam Cooke, the Everly Brothers, k.d.lang, Smokey Robinson, or anyone who is "a good singer with a good song." He views his voice as his primary instrument, with a focus on music that is "heartfelt" and "easy to listen to." Read More
