A New Story

by Shana Ogren Lourey

What lies ahead?  Is the path we are traveling on already written, or can we write it ourselves before or while we are walking it?

If you believe in making New Year's resolutions, then you must have some faith in the power of your free will.  You have control (at least some) over the future.

A few of the best children's books of the 1980's were the Choose Your Own Adventure series.  With alluring statements on the front covers, like "you're the star of the story!," each of the books allowed the reader to determine the possible outcome of the novel.  You would get several chances throughout the book to make a decision for a character.  If you chose decision (a), then you would turn to page 41 of the novel, whereas decision (b) would take you instead to page 30.

Let us say today that we are the stars of our own stories.  Some fill-in-the-blank resolutions are included below.  Cheers to the pursuit of your own 2012 adventure.

The person I most would like to be like is______________.
I will do________________ this year to be more like her/him.

The biggest problem in my community is _________________.
I will do ___________________ this year to try and improve it.

My favorite part of each day is _________________.
I will do _________________ this year to maintain and encourage it.

The scariest challenge to me is _______________________.
I will do _______________________ this year to confront it.
