Opera San Luis Obispo

Broadway by the Sea

by Kathryn Bumpass

Broadway by the Sea

Glorious singing, stunning views, beautiful gardens, wine tasting, painters at work, and a silent auction. It's Broadway by the Sea, presented by Opera San Luis Obispo each summer. Don't miss this feast of the arts, held at the elegant Chapman estate in Shell Beach, Saturday, August 18. The grounds will open at 1:00pm. A grand concert follows at 2:00pm.

Tickets for concert seating are $45 per person, or $55 per person for table seating. Planning to attend with friends? Reserve a complete table of eight for $440. Gourmet picnic box lunches provided by Lido Restaurant at Dolphin Bay are available for purchase. To reserve seating and order your lunch, visit OperaSLO's website or call 805-541-5369.

OperaSLO will honor Clifford Chapman, who recently passed away, by donating 10% of ticket sales to the Prado Day Center, where Chapman and Gene Shidler volunteered. Chapman was a longtime area patron of the arts, who annually made available his elegant estate for the Broadway by the Sea fundraiser.

This year's Broadway by the Sea will feature favorite numbers from musicals by Jerome Kern, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Leonard Bernstein, Sigmund Romberg, Marc Blitzstein, and many others. Maestro Brian Asher Alhadeff, Artistic Director of OperaSLO, and Jacalyn Kreitzer, Artistic Advisor to OperaSLO and Cal Poly music faculty member have assembled an impressive array of professional and student talent for the concert.

Leading the troupe will be husband and wife team Ryan and Heather Reithmeier. The soprano and baritone duo are two-time winners of the prestigious Beverly Hills Consortium Auditions.  In 2010 they made their debut at the Orange County Center for the Performing Arts as soloists for Faure's Requiem with the Pacific Symphony's Rising Superstars concert. They frequently develop and present collaborative concerts throughout southern California.

Heather was named 2010 Gwendolyn Roberts Young Artist of the Year by the Los Angeles chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS-LA) and recently performed the leading role in Henry Mollicone's Face on the Barroom Floor with OperaWorks' professional series. Ryan recently made his national tour debut with Opera A La Carte as Giuseppe in The Gondoliers and Sgt. Merrill in Yeoman of the Guard here in San Luis Obispo. In 2009 he was winner of the NATS-LA Gwendolyn Roberts Young Artist Auditions.

Artistic Advisor Kreitzer teaches many up and coming young artists in our area and is justifiably proud of them.  Among these is Isabelle Carpenter, who sang in this past month's Opera Camp production of Mozart's The Magic Flute. She also has recently sung the role of Charlie Buckett in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, a Kelrik Productions presentation.

Molly Leach just sang the role of Katharine in Stephen Schwartz's Pippin with Arroyo Grande High School, where she is a senior. She comes fresh from the UCLA Theatre Arts summer camp. Molly Dobbs is currently a theater arts major at the Royal Scottish Academy of the Arts in Glasgow. Caroline Hopkins just graduated from San Luis Obispo High School, is an OperaSLO Young Artist and a member of OperaSLO to Go. She plans to study in Spain for a year, before beginning college in theater arts.

A note about the 2012-13 season of the Met Live in HD:  Advance sales of tickets begin in late August for members of the Metropolitan Opera, Opera San Luis Obispo, and Cal Poly Arts. Sales to the general public begin September 4. Watch the OperaSLO website or Cal Poly Arts website for more information.
