The Morro Bay Library will soon be undergoing an internal remodel to unify the interior space. The Morro Bay Friends of the Library are proud to begin this long-awaited project! I will have more information for the community in September's column. We are finalizing a decision to hire an architect in order to begin the design phase. I'll be excited to share more details with you. Stay tuned!

Moms/Dads and Grandparents — Don't forget to remind the kids that their Summer Reading booklists are due Saturday, August 4. More details below about the wonderful prizes kids can win!

Tuesdays

August 14, 5 - 7 p.m.
Free iPhone Class Basics and Advanced Functionality by Morro Bay Resident Aaron Anderson of Rock View Realty
This is a hands-on workshop which is both an introduction to the iPhone and an advanced class on some of the less obvious aspects of iPhone ownership. Have you wondered what all those applications are all about and how you can take full advantage of them? Well then, this is the class for you. Learn about the camera and video camera: taking photos and video, editing them, and emailing both; using the App store; grouping apps together; critical apps; saving money with an iPhone; Voip and texting apps; pull-down preview; Siri; FaceTime, Skype, Using Maps; Ebay, Craig's List and Pro. You will also be exposed to Internet widgets/apps for business such as: Google Voice and Meebo. Please call 772-6394 to reserve your seat.

Wednesdays

August 1, 10 a.m. - Noon
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz
Oscar is a sweet but disastrously overweight ghetto nerd who—from the New Jersey home he shares with his old world mother and rebellious sister—dreams of becoming the Dominican J.R.R. Tolkien and, most of all, finding love. But Oscar may never get what he wants. Blame the fukú—a curse that has haunted Oscar's family for generations, following them on their epic journey from Santo Domingo to the USA.
Wednesday, August 8, 10 a.m. - Noon. On My Honor by Marion Dane Bauer
Joel dares his best friend, Tony, to a swimming race in a dangerous river. Both boys jump in, but when Joel reaches the sandbar, he finds Tony has vanished. How can he face their parents and the terrible truth? During this "Special Topics Wednesday" we will have the opportunity to discuss the important lessons this children's book shares.

August 15, 10 a.m. - Noon
The Help by Kathryn Stockett
At the start of the civil rights movement, a young white woman seeks to tell the story of the black maids who have been serving the residents of Jackson, Mississippi, for generations. Despite the risks of telling their stories, the women unite with one intention: hope for a better day. Join us next week (August 22) as we watch and discuss the movie – beginning at 10 a.m.

August 22 beginning at 10 a.m.
4th Wednesdays @ the Movies. The Help (146 minutes)

Thursdays

August 2 beginning at 2 p.m.
Central Coast Paranormal Investigators - Teens & Up
The presentation will include audio evidence, video from previous investigations, and experiences from members of the Central Coast Paranormal Investigators. The presenters will have the equipment used during investigations on display, hands-on use of some of the equipment, as well as an opportunity for question and answer. "Who ya gonna call?" (Can you recall the famous film that supplied the answer?)

Fridays

Aug 24, 10 a.m. - Noon
Join us for our 4th Fridays Mystery Readers Group. All the Colors of Darkness by Peter Robinson
As much spy thriller as crime story, main character, DCI Alan Banks, the Yorkshire copper is trying to unravel a murder-suicide with potential ties to national security.
Saturdays

August 4 beginning at Noon
Deborah Poppink - Ages 3 - 7
This performer won the John Lennon Song Contest in the Best Children's Music category. Her bouncy pop-rock songs are sure to enchant young audiences.

August 18 - Members Only shopping from 9 to 10 a.m. Public Sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Friends of the Library Book Sale at the Morro Bay Community Center
$3 bag sale from 1 to 2 p.m.

August 18, 10 a.m. - Noon
North Coast Writer's Club with local author Robert Hyde
The North Coast Writer's Club is here to lend support, accountability and encouragement for your writing projects - especially if you are interested in self-publishing. Bring your writing samples. More information: 772-2657.

More about the Summer Reading Program

Dream Big Read @ Your Library is this year's theme for children up to fifth grade. Kids who read 10 books on their own or read 20 books with a friend by August 4 will earn a reward book of their choice and other fantastic prizes. This year's prizes include a beautiful canvas Cloud Star book bag featuring the work of local artists, as well as coupons for LEGOLAND, Tastee Freeze, IN n OUT, Performance Athletics and more. New this year - families with babies are invited to participate. Children under 2 who have 20 books read to them can "earn" a free board book!

Own the Night is the theme for teens in 6th to 12th grades. This summer teens can earn a free book and prizes by reading 10 books. Teen program finishers can even enter to win a brand new iPod Touch!

Books (for the Wednesdays program only) are available for checkout in advance at the Morro Bay Library. The Summer and Fall Series 2012 Booklists, and 4th Fridays Mystery Readers 2012 Booklist are available for download at Morro Bay Book Discussion Group or at the library. The Morro Bay Friends of the Library fund all expenses of the library programs listed above. The MBFOL's purpose is to establish and maintain an association of persons interested in libraries; to focus public attention on Morro Bay Library branch needs; to support and cooperate with the county, city and state to enhance library services and facilities; and to stimulate gifts, endowments and bequests.
