Now Serving

by Shana Ogren Lourey

Spiritually and socially, I ask simply to be used.  These are the moments that give me life's greatest enjoyment and deepest sense of satisfaction, that I may function as a tool- a useful tool.  Even if I know naught how or why I am being used, the very faith that I am a link in a chain that is somehow connecting me to a goal or purpose, this fulfills meaning in life for me.

How to become used:

Pray for others.  My grandma Paula told me that she used prayer and suffering for others to help her through her own 7 childbirths.  With each push, she would call out and focus on the needs of another, saying aloud, "And this is for . . . who needs . . . !"

Devote your all (time or energy) to things you believe in very strongly.

Make it clear to yourself what is necessary.

Follow your instincts.

Trust something.

Move in the direction that is somehow challenging.

Accept your inability to understand what is beyond us.

Plant something.

"Fulfill your high purposes in me whatever they may be; work in and through me . . . I ask simply to be used."

John Henry Cardinal Newman—1801-1890,
an important English religious influence
