September 2009
Photography Club Exhibitions & Events

by Renée Besta

The month of September will be heating up the local photography scene, promising to compete with the infamous North County weather. A flurry of events will pepper the coming of fall on the Central Coast, including an exhibition and reception at the San Luis Obispo Art Center (SLOAC), several technical demonstrations, a program on Costa Rica by renowned local artist Dorothy Cutter, and a show on night photography by Dave Coronel at The Photo Shop.

September 3 - 30

Let's first kickoff with information on the SLOAC exhibition. The Central Coast Photographic Society (CCPS), an affiliate of the SLOAC, presents Multiple Exposure, a juried exhibition featuring 24 select images by 16 members. The show will be held in the McMeen Gallery, located on the second floor of the SLOAC. The exhibit was juried by the seven-member CCPS Executive Board, and will showcase a diverse array of contemporary photographic techniques, styles, and subject matter ranging from HDR (high dynamic range) imaging and montages, to SX-70 manipulation, macro (close-up), low light and underwater photography, and abstract works created by arranging and scanning objects found in nature. Both color and black and white photography will be represented, with a broad spectrum of subject matter including landscapes, flora, tide pools, foreign cultures, and historic Americana.

Now through September 14

Running at The Photo Shop is SLONITES, an exhibition by Dave Coronel featuring night scenes in black and white with select colors. The artist's reception will be held on Friday, September 4th from 6:00 to 8:00pm in conjunction with Art After Dark. The Photo Shop is located at 1027-B Marsh Street in downtown SLO, just south of Santa Rosa Street. For more information on Dave, please visit Dave Coronel Photography

Friday, September 4

An opening reception will be held at the SLOAC in conjunction with Art After Dark from 6:00 to 8:30 pm, at which time the photographers will be present for a "meet and greet" and to answer questions concerning their works and specific techniques. At 7:00pm, a presentation will be held in the Nybak Wing classroom on HDR (high dynamic range) imaging and methods utilized to produce abstract work from scanned objects found in nature. This lecture will be jointly given by Renée Besta, CCPS President, and member Robert Walter of Altadena, followed by a question and answer session.

September 4 - 13

In addition to the Multiple Exposure exhibit, a special 9-11-2001 commemorative show featuring select paintings, photographs and sculpture will run in the Nybak Wing of the SLOAC. CCPS Treasurer Peggy Jansson has been documenting the World Trade Center site for many years, and will be showcasing some of her photographs. For more exhibit information please visit SLO Art Center /exhibits.

Tuesday, September 8

At this CCPS meeting, member Anna Plotkin will demonstrate the most useful new features of Photoshop CS4, as well as how to write and run Photoshop action scripts to make your workflow more productive. Anna is the owner of an Atascadero photo retouching business and will offer many useful tips and tricks to benefit photographers at all levels. The Photographic Society meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm in the Nybak Wing of the SLO Art Center, with running times of approximately two hours. The Art Center is located at 1010 Broad Street at Monterey on Mission Plaza.

Thursday, September 10

Morro Bay artist Dorothy Cutter will present the main San Luis Obispo Camera Club (SLOCC) program featuring images from her recent excursion to Costa Rica. This program will emphasize the artistic presentation of photography, rather than serve as a travelogue. There was no particular order to her route––or photos––of the most important places. Rather the program will showcase the appeal of composition and color.

Dorothy's trip covered many of the National Parks, the Rain Forest, and the Monteverde Cloud Forest, in addition to Corcovado National Park on the west coast with its cloud forest, mangrove swamps, and 400 species of birds. She and her husband also spent time in the central mountains (elevation 7,000 feet), where the infamous Quetzal bird can be found. The ancient Mayas revered this bird as sacred, and their feathers adorned the headdresses of the Mayan kings. They also spent time at the Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal.

Dorothy has lived in Morro Bay for many decades. Prior to this time, she spent seven years attending art school, majoring in fine arts. More information about her work can be found at Dorothy Cutter.com.

SLOCC meetings are held at 7:30pm on the 2nd Thursday of each month (except December) at the Veteran's Memorial Hall in San Luis Obispo, located at 801 Grand Avenue near the corner of Monterey and Grand. There is a large parking lot next to the building. Our meeting room is in the lounge to the right of the main entrance, not in the main auditorium. Meetings generally conclude by 9:30pm and visitors are welcome at the meetings. Please "click" on over to the Club's web site at SLO Camera Club for more information.

Saturday, September 26

Commercial product and fine art photographer Michael Allen, who studied and worked abroad in New Zealand, will give a presentation combining a slideshow of his most popular photographs with a demonstration outlining how specific images were enhanced in Photoshop and Camera RAW. Michael was the top scoring photographer at competitions held by the SLOCC in 2008 and is entirely self-taught. Afterwards, several "before and after Photoshop" images will be shown to demonstrate the effects of optimization techniques. In addition, several digital manipulation methods will be discussed, including using Curves layers to dodge and burn, modifying specific color ranges with Hue/Saturation layers, and how to best sharpen images. At the end of the program, Michael will host a question and answer session.

This technical demonstration will commence at 6:00 pm at the Creekside Clubhouse, located in the Creekside Mobile Home Park at 3960 S. Higuera Street at Tank Farm Road in SLO. A sign-up sheet will be available at the September 10th general meeting of the SLOCC.

If all these events are not enough to satisfy your photographic appetite, then you must be a member of the Paul Bunyan Pixel Squad! Don't miss the spectacular exhibitions at the SLO Art Center in September, as well as the wide array of programs and technical demonstrations. Be there or be square, like a pixel.
