The Morro Photo Expo - Update

by Jerry Kirkhart

Many of you know the Expo will be held on October 23rd, 24th, and 25th. Seven classes on the 24th are not yet sold out, so there are still some excellent opportunities for both the beginner and the more advanced photographer.

Go Pro in a Day

- a class just added to the Expo, is led by an expert photographer who will live up to the class's name. The leader is Dean Sullivan, and he is indeed a pro. His photography business is Sullivan Studios. Dean's class will be offered on Friday afternoon. It can also be seen soon on the Morro Photo Expo website very soon. Be sure to sign up before the class fills up. This may be the class that changes your life from an amateur to a pro. To whet your photography appetite, some of the topics Dean will discuss deal with file management (preshoot plans, etc), image manipulation, working with clients, finding your niche, and standing out from the crowd. Read more on the website. An example of his work is seen in the column to the right.

Dean Shoots weddings, plus many other types of photography, so the class will learn some true secrets of the trade.

Photocache

- is another opportunity to photograph the beautiful area from Morro Bay to Montano De Oro is a self-guided tour using either way points and a GPS or maps (if your GPS does not use way points). The mission of this event is to find the some of the best spots around Morro Bay for the best photo opportunities on your own time. You will be in awe at some of the locations chosen. More information will be in your packet if you choose this event. Enjoy.

SLR Basics and Beyond

- is a class for those wanting to do more than just use the program mode on their camera. Pat Brown is the leader and will guide you through the many settings to explain, with examples, the features on how your SLR camera functions. This clearly defined class will help you actually understand the manual that came with your camera. It is a must for those wanting to brush up on camera technique.

Living History Photo Opp

- is led by Joyce Cory and will give photographers many photo opportunities to actually see various ladies dressed for the period of 1880-early 1900's. Joyce is an expert about this time frame. She knows more about the Spooner family than anyone and can answer all types of questions. There will even be a docent using a lasso to give photographers an opportunity to see if they can capture the rope in the air. The scenic areas here will round out this event.

Night Photography, Part II

- is taught by a real expert in night time photography, Howard Ignatius. Howard has been to 9 workshops just this year, learning from one of the the very best photographers in the world, and will certainly impress you. Some say you learn more about your camera while shooting at night than during the day. If you have never had success or never tried night time photography, you are in for a real treat. This part will teach about working with the dark. Howard will also give you many examples on camera settings and how to just plain have a great, new adventure.

How to Master Telephoto

- is taught by Kevin Cole. Kevin has such a reputation for his many tack-sharp photos that his first class quickly filled up. He volunteered to teach a second class. Kevin will give you an excellent background in how to get the photos you have been wishing you could get with a 300 mm+ lens. Photographers will first learn what to do, then go in the field to practice the techniques.

Flickr - Social Networking Paradigm

- is taught by Mike Baird. Many of you already use Flickr, but Mike will show you what you may not know about this extremely popular photo sharing site. He can answer any question you may have about using Flickr to its full capabilities, including how to use Flickr DNA, how to set up groups, how to find which photos are most interesting, how and why to use tags, how to create sets, and why Flickr is such a powerful tool. These are just a few of the subjects Mike will cover in his hands-on approach. Bring your lap top if it has a wireless connection.

All of these classes have descriptions in detail on the Morro Photo.com website, where you may sign up for the expo. The mission of the expo is to improve your camera technique in a setting that has many photo opportunities and to get you tuned up for the Morro Bay Winter Bird Festival in the middle of January. Enjoy.
