It Is Enough - Featuring Bob Canepa

Bob Canepa Bob Canepa

The best place to start is probably that I am a “jack of all trades and a master of none” in photography. I am consumed in finding the essence of each photographic opportunity, but ever so distracted by the next opportunity. So I guess I flit from one photographic opportunity to another with the anticipation of a child opening the next package at Christmas.

I also work diligently to be prepared, but am also very, very lucky in finding that essence in a capture. Perhaps this sounds egotistical, but if you have shot with me very often you realize, for some reason, this seems to be true. And of course, I am so very thankful.

It is important to me to share all I know and discover through organized meetups, random shoots, and direct instruction. Perhaps that comes from my 31 years as an instructor.

There are always challenges in photography. Recently I went to a location on Highway 46. From there I found an incredible sunrise, but quickly realized capturing what I saw would be impossible both with dynamic range, as well as with a single shot. It was obvious that this would become a panorama, as well as a High Dynamic Range series of shots to be combined in the computer at a later time.

As the final pano came together (see Highway 46 View image above), there were some 58 images combined and layered. This photo, placed on Flickr, has had 20,000 views as of 4/14/14. One taken a few hours earlier received over 45,000 views. Both were chosen as Flickr Explore images. This is the first time I have seen two so close in composition and structure both receive Explore status. I am honored indeed and thankful for all who view and chose them as favorites.

My passion does not stop with landscapes. Portraits of children, families, and individuals fascinate me as well. I try very hard to capture the spirit of each. It is not always what the client wants, (although I do make sure they get what they wish), but it seems they always like what I saw as the spirit and essence of who they are.

This passion continues in my search to improve and get closer to the essence of each subject — be it flowers, birds, architecture, black and white, or composite images.

Since discovering photography some 10 years ago I can only describe the feeling each and every time I pick up the camera as being that of a child with Christmas toys — the difference being, I do not have to put my toys down to go to bed or back to school.

It is enough . . . and so much more.
