Changing Spaces

Bird

Settling in to any new location takes time and patience when determining the priorities. Do you unpack the dishes first or the bedding? Does one stock the refrigerator or go out to eat? So many decisions to make so one can feel more quickly at home.

Bird
So, for me it has been just that. Basic decisions are done and now it is on to more important issues. Since I am feeling fairly settled it is time to think about the birds. I love listening to the songs and sounds generated by these flying wonders. I may not always see the birds I hear (especially my woodpecker) though I am still loving their sounds and all they have to say.

Now that I have some bird seed out I have had some awesome visitors and even some regulars. The visitors have included Dark Eyed Juncos and Mocking Birds. Regulars are the Towhee's, Scrub Jay's and a variety of doves I am unfamiliar with.

A couple of Eurasian Collard Doves have nested in the olive tree in the corner of the yard. Naturally they were thrilled when free food began showing up under their nesting site.

Bird 3
Their call is very different than the dove I have been accustomed to locally and in other areas I have lived. These all sound the same and seem to make the exact coo each time they vocalize. I thought it was a fake machine making the sound, though have come to realize it is real.

My Towhee (somehow they have become mine) are getting braver and if I leave the door open, at least one of them has figured out how to come in and visit. then find its way safely out. It watches me as I do my best to avoid panicking and then scaring it, which may cause it to freak and fly about my studio. I would rather avoid thinking of the mess (feathers and white stuff everywhere) that might ensue. So far, so good!

There are hummingbirds and swallows that get a drink from the pool as I swim, and lots of butterflies. The woodpecker seems to have left the area for now. I certainly hope it returns since its sound reminds me of being in the mountains.

It is so peaceful watching the wildlife in my backyard, listening to the rush of the surf and relaxing to either the sunrise or sunset. The recent Super Moon, which was so stunning. I love living here!
