There are 96 million pet cats vs. 83 million owned dogs, a reversal in
popularity from previous times.
47% of homes in the U.S. own at least one dog vs. 41% with at least one
cat.
52% of cat owning households have multiple cats vs. 40% owning multiple
dogs.
In dog owning homes the average was 1.47 dogs vs. multiple cat homes
averaging 2.11 cats.
Most dogs and cats are obtained from acquaintances or family members.
One third of cats have been acquired directly as strays.
One fourth of dogs were bought from breeders.
One
fifth of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters/rescue.
Less than 10% of dogs and cats are bought at pet shops.
Nearly 90% of pet cats have been spayed/neutered vs. nearly 80% of
owned dogs.
Owned dogs are evenly male/female whereas nearly three-fourths of pet
