Next Library Book Sale: April 29
Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 29. That’s the day of the next Morro Bay Friends of the Library book sale at the Morro Bay Community Center, 1001 Kennedy Way.
Thousands of gently used books will be available for 50 cents a piece, as well as many special finds priced in the $1 to $2 range. There will also be a special section for signed editions, rare and antique volumes.
The doors open at 9 a.m. for Friends of the Library members, so this is the perfect time to renew your membership if you have let it slide. The general public will be admitted at 10 a.m.
This will be the last sale before the library closes for a major remodeling project, so now is the perfect time to clear out those overcrowded bookshelves or those boxes of unread books in your garage and donate them to the Morro Bay Friends of the Library.
The library won’t have room to accept book and magazine donations while the remodeling is under way, so hurry and drop off book donations in the lobby of the library. And please, do it soon so there will be time for volunteers to get them sorted and priced in advance of the April 26 sale.
We still need and are accepting donations through the end of April during regular library hours.
We accept the following:
• Hardback Books
• Paperback Books
• Current Magazines
• Compact Discs – both Music and Books-on-CD
• DVDs
We do not accept the following:
• Reader’s Digest magazine
• Non-Current magazines
• Items with smoke or water damage
• Items in poor condition or with missing pages
Proceeds from the sale will help put the finishing touches on our library remodeling plans.
Chevron Donates $2,500
Speaking of remodeling plans, the Friends of the Library were pleased to receive a generous grant of $2,500 from Chevron Corporation to aid with our remodeling efforts. Although we have adequate funds available to begin the remodeling project soon, additional donations are always welcome to add some additional amenities that we cannot afford with the amount that we have raised.
Go to the Friends website to learn more about remodeling plans and how you can help.
‘Orange is the New Black’
April book discussion groups will start off with a discussion of “Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison,” by Piper Kerman on Wednesday, April 2. This book has been selected as the Cuesta Book of the Year, and the author will be speaking at Cuesta College on April 3.
Other upcoming discussion groups are:
• April 9 – “Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore” by Robin Sloan
• April 16 – “Defending Jacob” by William Landay
• April 23 – “The Innocent” by David Baldacci
• May 7 – “The Dovekeepers” by Alice Hoffman
Book discussion groups meet on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon. For more information, go to www.morrobaybookdiscussiongroup.org.
Honoring Volunteers
2014 will be a banner year for our library, and many of the achievements would not be possible without the loyal band of volunteers who contribute their time and energy to library projects – everything from sorting books to raising funds for the remodeling effort.
The staff of the Morro Bay Library will hold a Volunteer Appreciation Celebration this month to honor the volunteers and thank them for all they do.
In addition, the Morro Bay Friends of the Library would like to thank all our donors, volunteers and community members for their support of the remodel plans. Because of you we are close to having the funds to start construction!
Other events
Until further notice, all the usual events and programs will be available at the Morro Bay Library. Some scheduling and location changes will be necessary when library operations move to a temporary location during remodeling, but we will keep you posted.
Tuesdays at 10 a.m. is Pre-School Story Time. Join us for stories and music.
