Slowing the Aging Process

Aging
by Dr. Robert Swain

Q. What can I do to slow down the aging process? I’m 42.

A. I’m glad you did not ask to stop the aging process. All the hype about stopping the aging is not possible. Slow down - yes. Stop - no.

First let’s examine what is happening when we get older. Our metabolism slows down, our muscles lose some tone, we get stiffer, and we ache a lot more. So what to do to correct this downturn?

You mean I need to exercise?

That is a great starting point. Not sweating but starting with a walk and then walking faster and for a longer time period. You need to get your heart pumping again. A good figure to strive toward is 220 minus your age times 80%. Ex. 220 minus 42 equals 178 times 80% equals 142. That’s your target heart rate. Start at 50% and work your way up to 80%.

Do I need to lift weights? Yes. Start with 5 pounds and 1 rep of 8 and work your way up from their. This will also increase your heart rate and your metabolism. Stretching is also very important. Not bouncing but reaching and holding for 5 seconds is a good start. You should be able to touch within 8 inches from the floor and don’t forget about your shoulders. Shoulder injuries are one of the most prevalent as we age.

Eating a good diet is extremely important to slow the aging down. It’s confusing with all those fad diets out there. Pick one that you will be able do and then alter as needed.

Keep stress to a minimum.

These are all great but if your body is unable to function properly you will not achieve your goal. Your nervous system controls and regulates all of the systems of the body.

Your brain is like a computer. It sends messages to all the parts of your body to make them work and then they reply back to the brain. If there is a blockage in this communication then you have improper function and increased aging. Backaches, neck pain, digestion problems, numbness, cancers, Etc. You get the picture?

The bottom line is you need everything working 100%, 100% of the time. Anything less and your heath is in jeopardy. Spring back into health and slow down the aging process and live a vibrant and prosperous life. Don’t’ stop doing things because you’re old. You get old because you stop doing things.
