Time to Harvest the Earth's Bounty for Healingby Lucille M. BoscoAh September! The students have returned to school. The snowbirds are revving up their engines to take flight in their humongous motor homes. The autumnal equinox is approaching. Nature's landscape on the central coast of California does not see the dramatic changes one would witness on the east coast. Ours are more subtle, yet still astounding in their beauty. And, as always, the celestial landscape supports these changes. The transition from the intense fire element of Leo, during the month of July, shifts to the element of earth on August 22nd when Virgo takes center stage (which is not comfortable for people with Sun in Virgo). On September 5th the new Moon is stationing in Virgo as well. We actually experience a total of three planets — Sun , Moon and Mercury — stationing in Virgo. The Sun represents the daytime vitality of life, the Moon expresses the night reflection of the Sun, and Mercury is the messenger of the integration of the two. Mercury is the highlighted planet for the first three weeks of September. Mercury is said to be the "messenger of the gods." Mercury is the magician. "Astronomers consider the planet Mercury to be elusive, mysterious, and fast, moving at twenty-four miles per second through its eighty-day orbital cycle." (C. Casey, 1998, p.213) Mercury is the fastest planet orbiting around the Sun in our galaxy. To get a physical sense of Mercury think about the substance quicksilver, thought to be the first matter that all metals were formed. The planet of communication, Mercury is having its say in the sign of Virgo. The key is discernment in the way we express our thoughts and physical movements. Virgo expresses the mutable (changeable) quality of the element of Earth. The blending of the element of Earth with the quality of mutability sets the stage for all of us to perform acts of kindness toward healing the Earth, your community, or simply toward yourself. Opportunities abound to be of service. Decisions made with discernment will bring an early harvest. This is a favorable time for that dream job to appear, to clean-up your diet, or to bring orderliness to those mounds of paperwork in your office or storage spaces. Clean-up and clear out! That is the order of the month. Most importantly, we will all benefit from taking the time to go within to bring order to the chaos in our inner life. Upon observation of the zodiac wheel of life, each sign has its polar opposite (180 degrees apart). The September full Moon on the 19th exemplifies this condition as it stations in the water element and mutable quality of Pisces. The mercurial conductor of electricity from Virgo combines with the sensitive waters of Pisces, sending electro shock lightning bolts to the heavens. The resounding message is one of illumination to the truth of our existence — to be of service to humankind! The visible changes continue as nature hails the coming of the autumnal equinox on September 22nd. There is a change in the air. You can see it when the leaves of the trees metamorphose into the soft hues of reddish browns to golden. You can feel it from the nip in the morning air. You can even smell it when, at the end of the day, your spirit is uplifted by the scent of harvest soup wafting throughout your home. Daylight diminishes. Nighttime increases the opportunity to harvest the seeds of intention declared during the September New Moon. Saturn, Roman god of Harvest, will be there to assist you on your journey to collect the cornucopia of gifts. May your horn of plenty be overflowing. |
