Community Grant Program for Clean Water and Conservation

Morro Bay National Estuary Program

The Morro Bay Estuary Program is offering community grants to help fund conservation projects around Morro Bay.  We are delighted to offer funding opportunities for grants up to $5,000 for exciting and innovative community projects that address an identified priority issue facing the Morro Bay estuary and watershed.

The goal of the community grant program is to encourage and fund projects proposed by community members to implement actions in the Estuary Program’s management plan, either in part or in whole. The management plan focuses on actions to help conserve water, prevent pollution, protect natural areas, and educate the public about conservation.

Past grant projects include mutt mitt dispenser installation, estuary education in schools, volunteer-based restoration of the Elfin Forest, and a zero waste project at the golf course.  Future grant projects could include rainwater harvesting at a community center, planting native plants in a local park, a student video campaign about stormwater control … the ideas are endless.

Prospective applicants should review the Estuary Program’s management plan to ensure their projects are relevant and are encouraged to consult with Estuary Program's staff regarding proposed projects. Full criteria and the application are available online. All projects should seek to (1) engage the community; (2) create public awareness and participation; (3) implement a management plan action; (4) use cost-effective measures to implement projects; and (5) leverage funds through other community partnerships.

Deadline for grant applications is March 1, 2013.  Join your neighbors in keeping Morro Bay clean to ensure a great life for all of us!

The Morro Bay National Estuary Program is a non-profit, non-regulatory organization. It is one of 28 National Estuary Programs around the country working to improve the health of our nation’s coastal waters.  The Estuary Program brings citizens, local government, non-profit organizations, agencies, and landowners together to protect and restore the Morro Bay Estuary for people and wildlife. The Estuary Program staff conduct monitoring and research, restore natural habitats, and educate residents and visitors on how to keep Morro Bay clean and healthy.

The Morro Bay National Estuary Program office and the Estuary Nature Center are in the Marina Square building on the Embarcadero in Morro Bay.  For more information call 772-3834 or visit our website.
