The Other Day
by Shana Ogren Lourey
A current movie called The Purge imagines a future America that holds an annual evening of punishment-free anarchy. Citizens have the ability to commit crimes that day with pardon.
I'm not really interested in being part of a society that promotes a penalty-less crime. But instead of a Purge Day, perhaps we could be given the power in our country (and by that, I mean the money needed to accomplish the task and a paid holiday from work) to do giving and good actions for one day instead.
Is it odd to have forced good deeds? Government mandated to-do lists? Probably. But it's odd also to have not enough good deeds practiced. So we could start somewhere.
Here are different kinds of days we might hold and honor each year:
1) Letter Day – Postage is free! Everyone mail a thank you letter to someone else that has helped them in any way.
2) Family Day - Spend the day with your family (or with your closest friend if you have no family).
3) Introduce Yourself Day – To a neighbor or stranger at a grocery store.
4) Flower Day - Pick or buy flowers and put them next to every cemetery in a local graveyard.
5) News Day – We all read a newspaper, watch the news, or listen to it on the radio for one hour to learn about what others are up to.
6) Grow Day – Plant just one seed in your yard or in a nearby park.
7) Donate Day – Go through your clothes or pantry closets and find at least one item that is rarely or not being used. Bring it to a food shelter, Salvation Army, or other donation location.
8) Vote Day – Vote in the damn election! Required! Ha!
