Ask the Doc by Dr. Robert Swain

Let's start with aspertame.  Aspertame is found in over 6,000 food items.  Yogurt, energy bars, chewing gum, and gelatin snacks, to name a few.  Aspertame is aspproved by the FDA and has quite a few known side effects.  It accounts for over 75 percent of adverse reactions to food additives.  Read More

Beyond the Badge by Richard Hannibal

I was somewhat surprised at the national attention given a New York City Police Officer who gave a pair of boots to a homeless man. This act resulted in three days of national headlines, as if it were an aberration. Yes, it was a kindly act, and yes, I always like to see my beloved police profession get favorable press. However, this benevolent act is multiplied a thousand times a day, every day, by most cops on the beat.   Read More

Observations of a Country Squire by George Zidbeck

Approximately seventy-five years ago I learned to tie my shoelaces – a full year before mastering the multiplication tables. Somewhere between those two events, I laid down one new-moon night on the grassy field of an empty baseball stadium near my home.  Read More

One Cool Earth by Greg Ellis

The call has been sounded, "Return to the garden!"  A host of foodies, health activists, farmers, and environmentalists have promoted the idea for decades.  Lately, restaurateur Alice Waters, author and activist Micheal Pollan, even our very own first lady Michelle Obama have brought it mainstream, repopularizing local, organic, garden-based diets.  I and an increasing number of Americans have heeded the call and are returning to the garden in droves, not only for health and enjoyment but also to save money as food costs rise.  Read More

Surfing Out Of The Box by Paul Finley

Watching my kids grow, although still young, I can't help but wonder if they will end up being surfers. When our oldest daughter turned three, I had the opportunity to cut down an older board that I had made and make her first surfboard. Shortly after giving it to her, we took her out to see how she liked it. After pushing her into a couple little rollers on the shore, she flipped off the board and her head went under for just a second. In the cold water that we have here on the Central Coast, it was no surprise that she was not to thrilled with the experience. Read More
