Kinesiology
Dorfman Kinesiology (BDK)

This column is about my experience as an alternative health care provider within the modern medical system. Although I now live in Morro Bay, I still manage a health care clinic in the San Diego area, as I have done for the past twenty-five years and where I still work ten days out of each month.

Stretching Your Shoulders

By Brian Dorfman

Shoulders

This month I'll offer a few stretches to help keep your shoulders flexible, healthy and pain-free. If you are already experiencing discomfort or reduced range of motion these stretches can help work out the kinks. As with all the other areas I've written about (lower back, neck, wrist, thumb, etc) my approach with shoulders is three-fold, with stretching being one component.  Last month we addressed biomechanics and postural alignment, a second component.  The 3rd part of the equation is self-massage.

Together, these three actions make all the difference in the health and well-being of the shoulders.

Check out this youtube for a demonstration of three stretches that will keep your shoulders feeling better forever:

When doing these exercises please keep in mind that stretching is not a competitive activity.  If you push past the initial sensation of tension in the stretch, you may hinder progress.  When you feel an area go easy.  Stretches can be overdone.  Attention to your system is invaluable.

If you would like a more comprehensive stretching routine for the shoulders, I recommend my Head, Neck and Shoulders Fundamentals program. I have been using this material with patients for over 20 years and have witnessed the benefits that result from regular use.  Take care of your shoulders with proper alignment, stretching and self-massage, and your shoulders will feel better forever.
