Some Unusual Police Incidents
The following are merely highlights taken from hundreds of hours of work output of the Morro Bay Police Department's routine law enforcement, investigations, contacts and follow-ups; if you can call anything in law enforcement "routine."
- In the morning of December 1st, officers responded to Los Osos to back-up a deputy who requested assistance with the arrest of an uncooperative felony warrant suspect. MBPD officers arrived and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.
- In the evening of December 1st, officers responded to a traffic collision in the 700 block of Harbor Street. Officers arrested the 19-year-old female driver for being under the influence narcotics, possession of narcotics without a prescription, and transporting marijuana.
- In the early morning hours of December 1st, officers responded to an injury traffic collision in the 600 block of Piney Way. The 24-year-old driver of the vehicle struck a parked car and fled the scene on foot, leaving behind an injured passenger. The driver later returned to the scene of the collision. He was arrested for driving under the influence of prescription medications, and felony hit and run.
- On December 6th, Morro Bay Fire, Police and Police Volunteers responded to Kern Street regarding a report of a man buried in a trench at a job site. Emergency personnel found a laborer partially buried in a trench for a sewer lateral. A large section of soil had collapsed and buried the man up to his waist. Fire officials estimated the trench depth to be approximately 7 feet. No construction shoring was in place. Firefighters utilized air bags and shoring equipment to prevent additional collapse of the trench. The man was in extreme pain from the significant weight of the soil. A Public Services Collections Unit, led by Jim Hayes and Dylan Wade, arrived with a vacuum truck to assist in soil removal. From the time of dispatch to the time the man was removed from the trench was about 52 minutes. The man was transported to the hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.
- In the evening of December 7th, officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near Main and Sequoia. The 51-year-old male driver was arrested for possession of cocaine.
- In the afternoon of December 9th, officers responded to the Morro Bay High School to assist administrators with a female student who had marijuana in her possession while on campus. The juvenile was cited and released to the custody of her parents.
- In the afternoon of December 15th, officers received information that a man in the 2700 block of Cedar Ave. told a friend that he was going to kill himself because his children were soon to be taken away in a child custody issue. The man also said that he would shoot any police officers and mental health professionals who tried to intervene. Under the supervision of Sergeant Su Gomes, an Operations Plan was formulated to insure the safest approach to the location. Of prime concern was that one of the three children might have been in the residence. Officers implemented the Operations Plan, which resulted in the subject being contacted outside his residence. The safety of the children was assured and mental health responded for an evaluation of the man. After investigation, the man voluntarily went to county mental health for evaluation and treatment.
