As many of you know, Morro Bay lost one of our finest citizens when Jane Bailey passed away on November 30, 2011. Jane was a driving force in building your Morro Bay Library and a long-standing member of the Friends of the Library along with many other civic involvements. Please join the Morro Bay Friends of the Library, along with Jane’s family, at a gathering in celebration of her life on Sunday, January 15, 2012 at 2pm in the John Kim Room at the Morro Bay Library. (See Jack McCurdy's article on Jane)
Here’s what’s happening in January at your Morro Bay Library!

January 17 - Library Closed for Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday
Wednesdays

It's time for the adults to kick back from the holidays and watch a delightful new foreign film that follows the story of Chen and his desire to woo his daughter back into his life. When Chen's estranged wife reappears asking for a divorce and custody of their daughter, the musician girl decides she will live with whoever can provide her with a piano. Chen's struggle thus begins. When efforts to borrow money and even steal a piano fail, Chen concocts a preposterous plan - he'll make a piano from scratch! What could possibly happen next? Join us at the movies to find out!
Updated information about the Morro Bay Book Discussion Group that meets at the Library on select Wednesdays from 10 a.m. – Noon in the John Kim Room.
2012 brings the following changes to this popular program.
- The group will no longer be holding the 4th & 5th Wednesdays local author series. However, do keep an eye out for author programs that will occur at the Library as special events during the year.
- We will continue to have each 1st & 3rd Wednesday group read and discuss a variety of books such as the latest bestsellers, classics, traditional literature, historical fiction, mysteries or non-fiction books.
- We will continue to have each 2nd Wednesday group as a “Special Topics” day where the group discusses books that make us think! We will consider the essence of the message of the book and be ready to discuss that message. Reading the book cover-to-cover is not necessary for these discussions.
January 11, 10 a.m. - Noon The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Trying to make sense of the horrors of World War II, Death relates the story of Liesel — a young German girl whose book-stealing and story-telling talents help sustain her family and the Jewish man they are hiding, as well as their neighbors. Note: Even though this meeting falls on the 2nd Wednesday, we are expecting that everyone will read the book cover to cover as it’s not a “Special Topics” book.
January 18, 10 a.m. - Noon Spies of the Balkans by Alan Furst
As war approaches northern Greece, the spies begin to circle--from the Turkish legation to the German secret service. In the ancient port of Salonika, Costa Zannis, a senior police official, head of an office that handles special "political" cases, risks everything to secure an escape route for those hunted by the Gestapo.
