LOCK YOUR DOORS! Some Morro Bay citizens continue to live in denial. Yes, Morro Bay is relatively crime-free, but bad guys still lurk in the shadows. On 7-21-2011, a residential burglary occurred in the 2600 block of Laurel Avenue. The resident left the house doors unlocked while they were away. When they returned to their peaceful, crime-free little neighborhood, they found their home had been entered. Thieves left with two new flat-screen televisions, multiple firearms, jewelry, and money. The total loss was almost $10,000. We are finding that thieves will readily pass up a locked car or house, preferring the convenience of an unlocked one. A locked car will remain untouched in a cluster of unlocked cars where items are taken. This ain't Fresno or L.A., but it ain't utopia either. LOCK UP! |

In a four-week period, the Morro Bay Police Department responded to 1,281 calls for service, made 29 arrests, and generated 100 case reports. The primary charges were as follows:
(2) Out county felony warrants, (7) Driving under the influence, (2) Domestic violence, (7) Local misdemeanor warrants, (5) Disorderly conduct/drunk public, (1) Disturbing the peace, (1) Providing alcohol to minor, (1) Assault with deadly weapon, (1) Disobedience to a Court Order, (1) Possession of hashish, and (1) Driving with a Suspended Driver License.
Some of the more significant activity for this period is:
In the late evening of July 25th, Officers responded to a domestic violence call in the 400 block of Sicily Street. Investigation resulted in the arrest of man for domestic violence.
In the early morning hours of July 26th, Officers responded to Lila Keiser Park regarding subjects at the park after hours. Several people who had been drinking, were contacted. One man was arrested for furnishing alcohol to minors and contributing to the delinquency of minors. The minors were released to parents.
In the early morning of July 27th, Officers responded to a report of three "out-of-control people" screaming at a residence in the 400 block of Java Street. Officers arrested one man for disturbing the peace.
In the morning of July 30th, Officers responded to a report of a burglary at a residence in the 600 block of Ponderosa Street. The burglary occurred between mid-night and 5 a.m., while residents slept. Ten guitars, many of which were collector’s items, were stolen from an adjacent unlocked studio. This case is under investigation.
In the late evening of July 31st, Officers responded to a report of an assault with a knife at a residence in the 400 block of Errol Street. The case is under investigation.
During the evening of August 1, 2011, our missing person, Charles Jackson, was located. He was found deceased in his vehicle, which had gone over an embankment on Highway 41 between Morro Bay and Atascadero. The vehicle was located by the California Highway Patrol and a tow truck operator who were on the scene of an unrelated accident that had occurred earlier in the day. Mr. Jackson’s vehicle was at the bottom of a deep ravine. Mr. Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene. MBPD Detectives were on scene for over 7 hours while the vehicle and body were recovered. Police personnel kept in communication with the family members during the entire search and investigation.
On August 3rd. Officers responded to a report from a woman who claimed she had been held captive and assaulted by her ‘boyfriend’. The ‘boyfriend’, who is on parole, was reported to have gotten into an argument with the victim. The argument quickly escalated into physical violence. The ‘boyfriend’ allegedly restrained the victim, locked her in a closet at her home for several hours and threatened to end her life while assaulting her with a knife. The victim was injured during the repeated attacks and required medical attention. The boyfriend was arrested for Felony Domestic Violence, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Criminal Threats, Torture, and False Imprisonment. The investigation is ongoing.
In the early morning hours of August 4th, Officers responded to a report of shots fired and someone yelling, cursing, and making death threats on State Parks property in the area of Quintana Rd. and La Loma Street. Officers assisted California State Park Rangers with a search of the area, but with negative results.
In the afternoon of August 4th, Officers responded to the Morro Bay Power Plant to investigate a report of a suspicious subject who entered the plant property without permission. The case being jointly investigated by Morro Bay Police Detectives and local FBI agents.
In the early morning hours of August 8th, Officers responded to a report of theft of mail in the 2500 block of Ironwood Ave. Two checks totaling had been removed from a mailbox. The empty envelopes were found nearby where they had been discarded in the bushes.
In the morning of August 8th, Officers responded to a report of a body being dumped in the 700 block of Quintana Rd. Officers responded and only found a pile of discarded clothing.
In the early morning hours of August 9th, Officers responded to a report of domestic violence in the 200 block of Pacific Street. An intoxicated man became very confrontational with Officers. The man was arrested on two out-of-county felony warrants.
In the late evening of August 12th, Officers met with a concerned Morro Bay mother who said her 16-year-old son was in Los Osos and refused to return home. She requested an officer accompany her to retrieve her son. Since the son was in Los Osos, the Sherriff’s Department was requested to assist, but was busy with calls. Finally, MBPD Officer responded to Los Osos and retrieve the boy.
