A Bird's Eye View by Mike Stiles

It's September, and local birders are looking forward to the end of the "summer doldrums" and the arrival of our fall migrants. From mid-September onward, birders will be scouring the coastal migrant traps for southbound warblers, vireos, and others. Personally, I look forward to the return of the White-crowned Sparrows this month. September 18th is the earliest arrival date in my yard, since I've been keeping track. Read More

Coastland Contemplations by Michele Oksen

So many beautiful landscapes, seascapes, people, foods, and fun activities make our SLO Coast a great place to live or visit. And if you're in the market for acquiring some kind of treasure from this area you're in luck because we have them everywhere. Even something as seemingly ordinary as a stone from one of our beaches can be a cherished prize. Read More

Elfin Forest by Jean Wheeler

Although we generally see just a few kinds of insects and spiders while walking through the Elfin Forest, there are dozens, perhaps hundreds of different species of arthropods living in the Forest. Local naturalist Al Normandin will search every nook and cranny along the boardwalk for the good, bad, and ugly of these creatures, as well as the pretty late summer butterflies.  The importance and ecology of our local insects will be discussed during the walk.  Bring a hand lens or close-focusing binoculars if you have them.  Read More

Marine Sanctuaries by Carol Georgi

The following Yak Tityu Tityu and general Chumash solstice site materials are a result of over 40 years of my occasional archaeo-astronomy studies and recoveries. The materials have been pulled from my manuscript, "Rite Angles," on the solstice sites of the Chumash in general and Northern Chumash, Yak Tityu Tityu, specifically. Information on the Pole Star comes from greater details in my work in progress, "The Way Of The Poet: God Realized Rishi & Yogi, Taoist & Buddhist Ch'an & Zen, Sufi and Christian Mystic Poets in the World's Many Spiritual and Mystic Traditions." Sweet Springs Reflections by Holly Sletteland

In May of this year, we installed what we call an "iron ranger," a term borrowed from the park service.   The iron ranger is simply an unattended receptacle for the collection of fees, or in our case, the collection of donations to support the preserve.  We installed it thinking we might collect a few extra bucks here and there that would help defray some of the costs for maintaining the preserve.   I've been overwhelmed by the response we've received.  I am absolutely in awe of the generosity of our visitors.  We've had scores of good Samaritans provide their support and not a one has given their name or asked for a receipt.  The preserve has obviously won a lot of hearts, and we will do our best to keep it a special place that will draw you back again and again.  Thank you, Anonymous, one and all! Read More
