Ban the Bag!

Come to this meeting of the IWMA Board of Directors to speak in favor of the historic ordinance banning Single Use Bags in SLO County! These bags pollute our streets, creeks, beaches and oceans, they fill our already near capacity landfills, and cost SLO County businesses and shoppers thousands of dollars each year. Lucky for us, our community is poised to take action.
For years, it has been assumed that businesses must give these bags for free to their customers. But businesses incorporate the cost of the bags into their expenses, passed on to shoppers in the form of higher prices. According the Wall Street Journal, plastic bags alone cost businesses over $4 billion per year in the U.S.
Around the world, people have taken action to eliminate these energy intensive, polluting bags, including Ireland, Italy, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, India, China, Kenya, New Zealand, Israel, and South Africa. In America, Maine, Delaware, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Baltimore, Maui, Tempe, Tucson, Malibu, San Francisco, Palo Alto, Santa Cruz, Laguna Beach, Manhattan Beach and many more have done the same.
For this to happen in SLO, your must come to this meeting and make your voice heard!

National "Move to Amend" Spokesman in Local Appearance
Democracy activist will host San Luis Obispo forum on corporate personhood
The Progressive People of the Central Coast, in conjunction with the Sierra Club, will host a community forum on "Creating Democracy and Challenging Corporate Rule" with guest speaker David Cobb of the Move to Amend campaign. Part history lesson and part heart-felt call to action, the event will be at the Ludwick Community Center, 864 Santa Rosa Street, San Luis Obispo, from 7 to 9 PMon Wednesday, September 14th, 2011.
The recent U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Citizens United v. FEC opened the floodgates to unlimited corporate spending on elections. Cobb, an attorney and organizer for the Move to Amend coalition, will help local residents understand the history behind the recent decision and how they can work to abolish "Corporate Personhood" and reestablish a government of, by, and for the people.
"Corporate Personhood" commonly refers to court-created precedent that gives corporations constitutional rights intended solely for human beings. "Corporate personhood is not an inconsequential legal technicality," said Cobb. The Supreme Court ruled that a corporation was a 'legal person' with 14th Amendment protections before they granted full personhood to African-Americans, immigrants, natives, or women."
"We are inspired by historic social movements that recognized the necessity of altering fundamental power relationships," said Cobb. "America has progressed through ordinary people joining together—from the Revolutionaries to Abolitionists, Suffragists, Trade Unionists, and Civil Rights activists through to today. Move to Amend is a long-term effort to make the U.S. Constitution more democratic."
The forum will focus on how Central Coast residents can join the national movement against Corporate Personhood. Cobb will provide information about the issue and facilitate a discussion about local action in San Luis Obispo County and in communities across the country to win the amendment campaign through grassroots mobilization.
"We are a diverse coalition with deep roots in communities nationwide. We recognize that amending the Constitution to restore the power of the people over corporations will not be easy, but we know correcting the Supreme Court is imperative to the progress of our nation," said Cobb.
Over 130,000 people have signed an online petition supporting a constitutional amendment at MoveToAmend.org.
The local forum will take place on Wednesday, September 14th, at the Ludwick Community Center, 864 Santa Rosa Street, San Luis Obispo, from 7 to 9 PM. There is no charge for admission. For more information call (805) 543-7385 or send email.

"Ballet In The Vineyards"
Ballet Theatre San Luis Obispo (BT-SLO) announced it will host "Ballet in The Vineyards," a reverse drawing fundraiser benefiting BT-SLO to be held Saturday, September 24 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. The event is set at a private estate with breathtaking views overlooking Edna Valley. Cost is $150 per couple which includes wine and light dinner, a reverse drawing entry ticket ($2000 grand prize), silent and live auctions, and ballet performances choreographed by Theresa Slobodnik. Only a limited number of tickets will be available for this magical event so act quickly.
Established in spring 2006, BT-SLO is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides opportunities for ballet dancers of all ages and abilities to perform meaningful work in real theaters and inspiring the next generation of artists and performers through youth outreach.
